Crumple zones? I had a RX8 that was whacked on the rear bumper three times and the damage was minimal in all three cases.

I do agree. But the front of the car is usually softer than the rear.

Remember.

That Merc is supposed to look like that.

Components are designed to snap off and crumple, so that the impact force from the accident is taken up by those components and not your spine.

This is why it cost so much to have cars repaired, and while most minor front ends, even on cheap cars, cost between 30 and 50k

Another thing to keep in mind is that the car behind was probably braking causing the front to I dip almost under the bumper of the car in front, getting rear ended by a truck would see different results.
