I got a e36 320i and will be going to Mafikeng shortly.
It's the 1st time im going to fill the car up. How many km's can i expect to get when the car is filled with 65lts?

i usually get 350km on R300 during the week. That's doing 120 and driving normally.

The e36 320i wasn't the lightest on fuel. I would guess you will get around 9,5km per litre. This should effectively give you around 600km on a full tank. Then you should drive with quite a light foot. Also, I would not run the car to dead empty before filling up again. Personally I will fill up again when she reaches 500km.

Shouldn't the economy go up to around 7-8 l/100km when doing long distance? I know the 330i goes up to 7.5-8 l/100km when doing long distance driving and I'm guessing it can't be more economical than the 2.3l??:thumb:

Mr legacy you are forbidden to comment on fuel consumption figures.. you with your broken consumption gauge that never goes over 10..

The 330i is really light on juice on the open road. we got better fuel consumption with the 330i compared to my old e46 320i (2.2l), and way better than the e90 325i.

Pah! It does go above 10 when I pull away and so on. Put your car on instantanious consumption and first gear and then floor it, worst I got was 69.89 l/100km:shocked:

If it is anything like the range indicator on my 540i, rather take a stick, dip it on the tank, and guess.

That thing is off the hook dude. I pull the car out of the garage with 300 odd km still to go, drive to the shop and back, 3 km's max, and suddenly I have 130 odd km left.

Oh yes that one. On the 540i I call it the ballcrusher. Whenever you put your foot down, and the needle dives past the 30l/100km mark, you get tears in my eyes.

I can't tell you how accurate they are though.

yesterday we were cruising with the E36 318i and I was doing 120km/h on a very flat road, and this needle was sitting at 6l/100km. Bit optimistic if you ask me.

I was also doing 120 and it was also sitting between 6 and 7 lts/100km.
But just wondering.

but at 120 the car is just under 3500rpm, is this normal? Seems a bit high to me

It is better to light a match, and then stick it in there to check if you can see the level..... (at own risk)

From JHB to DBN with cruise control (125km/h) on my 325i E36 I got around 7.8L/100KM and when I reached DBN there was nearly an quarter tank left. But when just driving in town it is damn heavy on fuel

I remember seeing an article in CAR mag some years back showing a comparison between consumption figures for the various E46 petrol engines and it was literally a case of the larger capacity engines were the more economical at higher open road speeds (speed limit and above). And makes sense, I seem to remember that the smaller capacity engines were then slightly more economical in town driving...

At the end of the day it depends how you use the right pedal and how much of the middle pedal gets used (braking equals waste of energy)...

I do not notice anyone saying something. POWER-to-WEIGHT. The harder the engine needs to work the more it drinks.
Also normally smaller engines is geared bit higher thus at highway speeds it runs at higher revs than the bigger engines.

I recently drove E39 525i touring down from jhb to cpt. The first bit the consumption drop to 7.5L/100km at lowest. As i got closer to cape it creeped up to 8.2L/100km and we had a lot of stop and go road works. In town only i get around 13-15L/100km.
