How does someone with very little mechanical knowledge ideally buy a used BMW?

Your previous post said R130k is the guy's lowest, use that as your entry price point since he volunteered the information. Its a fair price considering the diesel demand due to fuel prices, especially if accident free and well looked after.

Get the car checked properly at the mech and check gearbox adaptations are within spec for a service. Is the car stock, I see the tail pieces are different?

Low mileage example in the greater scheme of things, so should be a good purchase if all checks out.
I called the seller and he said the previous owner changed the exhaust tips and the tail pieces . He saying it's purely cosmetic. Is that in any way a warning sign?

My plan now is to take the 320d to Brilliant Mechanical Workshop on Tuesday and have them look it over. If those guys agrees with the owner that the car is in great shape I'll buy it at 135K which is the lowest he would go.

I have question regarding the SA car market which perhaps you guys could answer. I'm not from here, but it seems to me that used cars in Joburg are consistently 10-15% cheaper. See examples below. I think if the 320d falls though I might have to look at cars in Joburg even if it's an extra hassle.

2011 320d, 105kkm at R120000

2012 320d, 92kkm at R120000

Those are more or less indentical to the car I am looking at, but with a lower mileage. Am I missing something or is Joburg just a better buyers market than Capetown?

I guess I can partly answer my own question after doing some research. The first dealer Eagle Cars has a terrible reputation. Apparently they sell cars that have been in accidents and hide the fact from the potential buyers.

Correct,

These JHB street dealers are bad news!

Get the car checked at Brilliant Mechanical Workshop for peace of mind, they will also be able to tell you if the car has verified mileage to corroborate the service history. I personally hate the droopy style tail piece so would also change it, not a sure fire sign of a fully modded car.

At the end of the day, its not a new car so you'll need to spend a bit on maintenance down the line but that's to be expected. Just make sure big ticket items are good for the foreseeable future, especially the gearbox, as that can be a costly repair. If R135k is his lowest and the check reveals some maintenance is needed, use that to drive down the price.. R135k in the current climate for that particular vehicle is not bad at all.

P.S - beware the dodgy Jhb dealers, separate thread on the forum for them. I personally prefer private sales versus unknown dealers cause you get to vet the owner, along with the car. Trust your gut.

With Coisman being on vacation I don't have access to eNatis. I decided to pay to use https://vindocs.co.za/ instead and run the VIN there. However, the car shows up as a 320i and not 320d. Not sure if the site is just unreliable?

Yikes, if this is all a paid report gets you then It is pretty shit. You can get a more detailed (and accurate) report for free.

320i, but has the correct diesel engine listed, also stated it is a wagon and not a sedan. lol

As already mentioned, some of the cheaper cars in JHB are from dodgy dealers who buy wrecked cars, fix them (poorly) and then sell them at a lower price.
Some of the vehicles they even tell you are cash only offers, no finance on them.

My friend got caught out by them, he even had a Ford dealership check the car first and it passed the Ford 100 and whatever point check.
When he took the car for wheel alignment is when he discovered it was not 100% and then Ford wanted nothing to do with him and the fact that their report lead to him buying a previously written off car.

He managed to get hold of the previous owner who was shocked as insurance wrote off the car. The warranty, at the time of purchase, was still active with Ford as well.
The best Ford would do was to give him a mere 10 to 15% discount on the parts required to repair it and ensure the vehicle was safe to drive again.

Lots of dodgy shit goes on in the motor industry.

So I had the 320d looked over yesterday. Brilliant Mechanical Workshop and Garage 808 were booked out for the next week so I had to go to Dekra which I've read mixed reviews of. I think I got lucky however because the mechanic who looked it over seemed competent and he was customer service oriented enough to explain his thought process on buying used cars in general and the BMW's in specific.

He said the 320d had wear and tear like with any ten year old car, but he thought it was in good condition for its age and mileage. He also said they see very few issues with the 320 diesel overall. I'm sure he could have missed something as the whole thing only took 45 minutes, but it's good enough for me to move forward.

Do you guys have any final thoughts on how I as a first time car buyer in SA can safely buy the car without getting ripped off? I'm doing a cash payment and I hear horror stories about people ending up sending someone money and ending up with no car. If you have any best practices for the actual transfer of ownership do let me know

Ah man it's a real shame those 2 booked out. Garage 808 will find things even dekra don't know to look at when it comes to bmws. No offence to the guy at dekra, but Colin is on another level when it come to attention for detail. It's magical how he finds the issues. I still love it when I get it back with those things fixed. Everytime after a garage808 visit my cars drive better and closer to like new.

Anyways, the buying part has some level of trust required. I usually want to see the ownership paper first. All the spare keys ect. Then only I worry about how to make payment.

Be warned, instant EFTs only work in business hours and even then, make sure your bank can get hold of you, else the payment just get declined. Especially for any value over R50k.

Make sure you have a copy of the blue and yellow forms on hand and it gets signed by the seller at a minimum. This is required to transfer ownership.

Finally, get a sale agreement letter that allow both parties to sign which have fields open to describe the car, how delivery takes place, how much you paying, how you paying. Also make sure Id nr and contact details of both parties are there. This is what you and seller use legally if anything in the sale go wrong. Basically your legal proof of the transaction. Sometimes when transferring ownership they ask for this, sometimes they ignore it.

Maybe have a friend go with if it make you feel better.

I'm sure seeing a BMW specialist would have been better. It makes it more difficult making a purchase when they lead time for getting an inspection is that long though.

Thanks for walking me through the sale. I'm putting what you wrote into a check-list (y)

I ended up buying the 320d on Friday. Only time will tell how it'll work out, but I feel excited about having made the purchase and it's great to finally have a car that I enjoy driving. I want to give a big thanks to everyone who helped me out in the thread or via PM. This community is a fantastic resource and I really couldn't have done it without you guys :)

Congrats Peter. I know quite a few months later but hope all is still well with the car. I'm in the same situation. Hard to trust what you see is the real deal. Going to see a 320d with 187k on the clock but I'm being positive and will use this thread for some further guidance.

The second one i asked Coisman to do a check.

NUR58676 – Silver BMW 320d Auto, 2009-06-04 model, with 207401kms listed 2018-09-22 on the last roadworthy.

No SAPS marks and owner history shows 6 owners, plus 4 dealerships, plus in 2016-12-01 Momentum Short Term Insurance, so Insurance written off as not viable to repair, then in 2017-10-17 Salvage Management and Disposal, so again written off as not viable to repair. In between there was a Mr Thomas that owned it.

Vehicle is currently owned by a Mr Chetty as from 2018-10-03, and is roadworthy and disc valid till 2022-09-30.
@Diesel this is incredible. I’d line to find out similar history for a car I recently bought-would you be able to check for me as well?

Hi MeanMachine. I'm extremely happy with the car and I think the advice I got in this thread is largely the reason it worked out so well.

Please ask Coisman to run an Enatis check on the car like Diesel suggested. I personally also took my car to a mechanic to look it over before I bought it.
