Guys how does one remove the E90 crank pulley centre nut? Or can anyone recommend a machie or friend that can help me out please? I think you need a special tool cos I had some guys trying to remove it and but the crank was turning. Tried to turn the engine while holding the centre but but the engine seemed to want to jump out.:fencelook:

Hey man, firstly you need be 100% sure wether it is a 'left or right' hand threaded bolt holding the pulley. Then only you can plan on loosening it, making sure it is in the correct direction of turning.

But I would say get advice from someone that has done this before.

Good luck! :=):

If your crank bolt is similar to the E36 318iS bolt which has a torque of 320nm then you need the special tool that you bolt onto the ring around the nut that holds the pulley. i had my brother make me a tool for this purpose - a piece of 8mm? thick flat with a 40something mm hole and three holes for the three bolts holding the pulley. I was going to replace the crank seal and needed to undo the big nut. Well, started removing all the belts and the pulley and then realized that the tool my brother made me was not going to work as its head is supposed to be bent inwards and flat again as the pulley bots are in a "hollow". What i did then was to use my old torque wrench and fit it to the big bolt and braced it on the floor and twisted the key to start the car for a bout a second. This jolted the bolt loose!!! (I do not think it was ever tightened to 320nm as it seemed to have been so easy.) So, that is how i managed to loosen the bolt. To tighten it again is the BIG problem as you have nowhere to lock the crank except on the flywheel and they tell me that one can easily bend the teeth on the ringear that way. Got a friend with an impact wrench set to tighten it.

PM'd Gizmo. If I dont come right with jom, I'll most probably end up flat-bedding the car in to a workshop, but need to know which one cos the expenses r piling up so far...

Got some good feedback from Gizmo, but dont have the expertise/tools to carry out this task. I'll need a BMW mechie who can come out as towing charges will kill me. I'm in JHB North so would appreciate if you guys can put me in contact with anyone in the area.

Thanks.

A Remove radiator covers, and remove car underbody covers
B Plug in special BMW tool to lock flywheel(looks square about size of R5 coin, with rigged teeth)
C Get a breaker bar and use it to turn the centre nut anti-clockwise(turn from passenger side towards driver side) - Warning, you may let it rip during this exercise.
D Undo bolt, remove vibration damper, and compare with new part, then fit new part and fasten bolt with a torque wrench.

#Note: Torque setting was initially set to 140, then you do approx 3x 60 deg turns.

E Follow the same steps but in reverse
