HOW BAD ARE OUR ROADS

Yesterday I had to drive down to Newcastle and back to Boksburg. We drove on the N3 via Vrede to Newcastle. The road from the N3 all the way into KZN is totally F*&%$@ . I drive a E91 320D and this poor car took punishment of note last night. On the way back we went via Volksrust/Standerton and then went on the Leandra Springs road onto the N17 and road after Standerton to the N17 is so bad that my spoiler was touching the tar in the middle of the road (the riffles made by trucks). When in KZN the roads are great the FS roads are dog shit and MP roads well they don’t have roads. We kept on getting signs saying POT HOLES 10KM, F*%$ me rather put up one sign saying if you can find TAR you can use it. We have to pay to use freeways and highways but the secondary roads are totally shit.
My car now needs front spoiler to be re sprayed and oh yes on the way down passing Brakpan airfield some Puttana road into the back of me so I need the back bumper re sprayed as well, Hello LZ.

What a F&%$#@* Tuesday………………

First of all, I love my car, but I will never part with our bakkie for this very reason! And you would think that after all we are paying for these days the roads would be better maintained...

+1 anyone think that the e-toll money is going back into road maintenance? Ja right! Even our N1 highway's buggered, look at the painted lines on the side of the road they're all wavy where the tar is warped and no adequate run off area's for when it rains, Sanral PK!!

Indeed...

What saddens me though, I know what the toll fee's on that stretch of road is, and what we pay in road tax, and what we are about to start paying...

VIVA ANC !!

Send me some pics bud, I shall give you a quote.

i see they are redoing the r21 for the third time now, this is the third time in 1 year and in the same spot

so either they are incopetent or use cheap materials to save money

Or it was screwed up intentionally so that the same guys can redo it again..

Or it is just a combination of both.

They also now re-did a couple of patches between Rigel and lynnwood on the N1 and they are now worse than before :thumbdo: :nonono:

The money to fix those roads keeps on getting stolen, just more proof how sh!t our government is ?

Look at the Western Cape roads, do no think they know what a pothole is, DA doing a good job, but I do not expect the ANC to follow as it will give them less money to steal.

See my story below

My Worst Nightmare

At the same place where I had my accident, yesterday there was a big accident in the morning. A Toyota bakkie crashed into the back of an old bakkie and both ended up in a ditch. No warning signs, no constructionsworkers, no foreman, nothing at the scene......

The N17 road between Leandra and Ermelo is so SH!T that when it rains, the tar starts to deteriorate and we must pay R64 in tolls for 100km of shitty road on a one way trip.

Last weekend I headed down to the eastern free state for a weekend away.

For some reason my GPS decided that the Reitz off-ramp would make for an interesting alternative route this time. I took the off ramp and as soon as I got up to speed It changes to gravel road. The really fun part is that the gravel road is about 20cm lower than the tarred surface.

I landed up on this POS road for about 70km before I could find tar again. Then my GPS decided to take me through a squatter camp in the middle of nowhere. On one of the roads was a ditch about 30cm deep across the whole road and my front bumper dived straight into the other side of the ditch.

My car is in a rather sorry state right now.

The NW roads are disgusting. The worst part is, if they were proper, some of them would make for an epic drive...

i can agree to this, i was down in Drakensberg from Fri last week, till early this week. i drove down using the N3 till Harrismith and then going onto the N5 then R712 to the Resort.

when on my return, i used the R712 - N5 and the old road (alternative) coming back and it was hell to play with, luckily it was during the day, i can not imagine driving that during the night.

i am quite happy staying on the N3 and paying those toll fees.

The problem going to Newcastle from JHB using the N3 is you can get off the highway at Heidelberg to Balfour, Standerton, Volksrust then Newcastle (this is the best way so I am told) or you can get off at Villiers or the next off ramp Vrede that takes you to Newcastle (crap road) or you can drive all the way down to Harrismith and drive back up on the R722 (this would be crazy). If you want to test a off road Vehicle for the Dakar take the N3 to Vrede to Newcastle, Volksrust, Standerton, Leandra and I think if it makes it you will be in great shape fo the Dakar.

This is the problem, we are content to pay toll for better roads, but the alternative roads should not be a nightmare to drive as a result of the surface structure. If the Government just opened their eyes and paid small fees for the upkeep, they will not have to fork out millions due to the non upkeep of the roads. (ID 10 T error).
