High Revs at Idle, and Revs bounce

Hey guys, I know this thread is old by now but I realised I never shared the sollution to my idling problem:

Believe it or not, it was really simple - I still don't understand how it solved it, but it's been months now, and still the problem has not come up again.

I put new tyres on in Dec 09, and when they checked alignment, I had a look under the car (a rare oppurtunity for those of us that don't have yards, never mind ramps in a workshop) and I discovered something wedged in a space between the frame and some of the plates under the car, more or less right under the passenger seat. It was a spiky ball seed thingy (I believe that's the scientific name) - ;-).

It was about 1cm diameter, and the spikes stuck out about 2 to 3 cm from the hard centre shell. I removed it with some force (it was really wedged in there), and booya, no more high idling...????

As said, it hasn't been back since, so I can only assume its a really freaky coincidence or there must be some sensor or something there?.

PS...Got mattes from a dealer, R600 from Clearwater BMW, and they're awesome.

Thanks all

my car is does the same thing when i press my clutch in the idle drops to 500rpm and picks up again but the mac says its the oxygen sensor and bmw wants 4k for it.... after reading some of the threads here i think i might be that the air is getting sucked into the intake somewhere i need to check that out first before changing the sensor.

Hey Lunatik, that's not what mine was doing, so I can't offer BMW advise on that, but I had a similar problem on my old citi golf. That ended up being a valve in the carb that wasn't operating properly. It also wouldn't stop dropping at 500 rpm, it would die, every bloody time the clutch was in.

Funny enough, I saw a mate of mine in traffic who has a BMW. He shouted across asking how things were. I told him my golf was giving me hastles. So he Shouted: "Stop f8cking around and buy a BM already!" - Not knowing that the hunt had already begun. 2 months later I had one too.

Good luck with your prob though - obviously it's not a carb issue, since we don't have any. Air being sucked in seems a likely issue, judging by what I've learnt so far.
