High Revs at Idle, and Revs bounce

Hey guys. Just bought my 2003 330i, 123000km, 5spd - my first ever BMW (and 2nd car ever)

I have a quick question for you smart guys.

The car idles a bit high. When I stop and put the clutch in, it blurbs to about 1100rpm, and then settles to 1000rpm. Isn't this a bit high?

Also rev related. After hard(ish) driving(not breaking, just full throttle fun), I find the revs tend to 'bounce' when I put the clutch in (or in neutral) when standing still, almost like I'm gently feathering the throttle. Jumps between 1000rpm up to even 1700rpm - foot off the gass, car in neutral, standing still. This worries me a bit - doesn't seem right.

But this aside, the car is phenomenal.

As gizmo said, check for leaks on your intake after the MAF. I find that the easiest way to find these is with some carb cleaner, just spray it lightly around the intake while the car is idling, and you will quickly hear if there is a leak, the car will suddenly pickup revs if its sucking the cleaner in somewhere.

Check your floor mat. My car was doing this and i realised that my floor mat was partially covering the accelerator pedal. I was letting go of the clutch but my right heel was holding the carpet in place pushing down on the accelerator pedal. Quite embarrasing.

your icv(idle control valve)could also be dirty and sticking.....try cleaning that aswell if the intake boot doesnt seem to be the problem

Thanks oaks, I'll get to that as soon as can and report back.

Can't be my mats - got the car without any(2nd hand dealers - gotta love em). Wanna buy some asap. I'm guessing there are specific e46 individual carpets.

And I'm sure they look reeeaaaal nice.

Had some rubber Toyota mats on top of the BMW mats, but that's more of a hassle though so I too it out.
