Hi Guys

hope you all well?
i'm new to this form.

need help with my e46 2005 330D viscous fan, i heard lately when i turn the car off it makes a noise until it comes to a stop, saw there is play on the fan but the water pump shaft is still solid so i think its just the bearings on the visco, i read threads that you need a 32mm spanner as well as a viscous fan spanner, is the viscous fan spanner necessary for removing the fan as well and not only the water pump?

i already bought the new visco today just the installing process is stalling me.
where can one buy a visco fan spanner in JHB/east rand area?

appreciated!

Howzit bud.

Post an introduction thread in the new members sections together with pics of your car.

The fan spanner basically locks the water pump preventing it from turning so that the viscous fan can be loosened. Sometimes its possible to "shock" the fan loose but if it has never been removed then its gona be a struggle.

You can try a place called Spec Tools in JHB (Crown Mines area)

You would typically be looking for the "fan clutch tools"

As Samman said, try shock the nut...

KEEP IN MIND, ITS A LEFT HAND THREAD...loosens opposite to a wheel nut or general purpose right hnd thread.

Apply some Q20 to the nut, and fit the spanner, making sure to turn it in the right direction(right or clockwise direction to loosen), if the water pump turns with, look at how you can lock up the waterpump by using screw drivers to wedge in around the pulley. Give it a tap with a rubber mallet and it should loosen the nut up.

Best of luck - they shouldnt be too tight, but if it is - be patient and careful not to damage surrounding auxiliaries.
