Guys: i hear this being bantered about rather often these days. Please excuse my ignorance but i dont know what its purpose is. enlighten me please

Oil breather, just behind air filter

1. What does it do ?
2. How often must it be replaced ( km period )
3. Replacement price + - ?
4. Where to buy ?

I believe on the E90 the oil breather was replaced to the vortex type..the problematic filter was the loo roll filter on some of the E46's..correct me if I'm wrong but I'm quite sure of it..but if it is the loo roll..buy the vortex breather from the dealers :thumbs:

what type of problems were incurred with the loo roll type ?

mine is an 06 model so thats awfully close to the end of the e46 production which inevetibly means i might still have it on no ? ( the loo roll type )

heres a good answer I found pn BMWland:
The purpose of the unit is to separate the oil from the fumes that the engine produces and return the oil to the sump.

Where the loo roll falls down is that if it gets clogged, then it effectively blocks the engine breather. If the pressure builds up sufficiently, the engine oil gets forced through the turbo seals and into the inlet, so the engine runs on its own engine oil until destruction - there's no way of stopping it in the worst case - short of holding the brake on and stalling the engine (which by that time may already be at peak revs or more).

The vortex cannot block up as the "gap" is relatively huge. It works on a similar principle to Mr. Dyson's Vacuum cleaner.

I understood that all E9x had vortex as standard - BMW having learnt thier lesson with the E6x.

I woudn't advise anyone to revert to the loo roll, particularly on a worn engine, as the breather filter (or separator, as Mr. BMW correctly calls it), will be working overtime.

thats great & all but, do they know what they sell ?. I just called them to ask if they stock liqui Molly & the intention was to actually ask do they have stock & the guy who answered said they do not stock that at all. I told him i know of folk that have bought there recently & he didnt know what i was talking about.

I also got mine from the Midas in Centurion the one on Hendrik verwoerd drive not the one physically in Centurion near the Kentucky. :thumbs:
