Help oil light is alive

Hey guys, I have a bmw e46 318I n42. Recently changed my oil pump and now the oil light stays in while it idles and when I rev the car over 1 the light goes off. I also feel like the idle is too low. Im not sure what could be the issue. I did decat the car last year some time. I have had no luck trying to diagnose the car and tired of being ripped off by so called bmw mechanics

Hi guys, thanks you for the warm welcome.
I had filled 5w40 and the engine was very rowdy and the oil ight did the same. I change the oil to 20w50 and the engine os much more silent

Can't see if its a yellow oil light or red.

Yellow means oil is low (or possibly faulty sensor if the oil level is correct).
Red means no oil pressure which is BAD. Don't run the engine if this is the case.

Hi.
To dig a little deeper,
why was the oil pump changed?

If it was changed because it failed, maybe there might be some bearing or other component damage that also explains the louder engine and loss of oil pressure...

Looks like red light to me, low pressure? maybe just check the plugs are connected properly and are cleaned nicely - sometimes a faulty connection is the problem...........

Red light is Low oil pressure..

Why did you replace the Oil pump??

Something is not sealing properly on the new oil pump
So while its trying to suck up oil, its sucking up air somewhere..

I doubt its sensor related due to the engine being noticeably noisy.

But why was the oil pump replaced??

I had that engine many years ago- was very smooth and powerful for its size, but very troublesome too towards 100k. with oil issues.
The correct oil spec for it tho i think is 5w30 so I'm a bit curious why you using one so heavey at 20W50...can't be good for start ups. They say most engine wear happens at start up so thinner viscosity is better. You also don't say if your oil is synthetic or mineral etc. I hope you're using fully synthetic.
But it's doubtful that any of these things could be bringing on that oil light, but who knows.
I'd change the oil pressure switch first cos it's cheap, and see. Then use correct viscosity oil, and synthetic. Also we don't know what oil pump you're using brand wise and whether it is a correct OE fit so check that too. If all else fails you might have to strip inspect and re-do...hope not:dunnoanymore:

I changed plugs, I used fully synthetic oil and still using.it. thicker oil was used because the engine was rowdy. Oil pump was changed because the one that was on the car broke, the pulley at the front which the chain runs on broke. Next bet is to strip it and check what could be wrong. I put in a second hand oil pump

Probably the oil pump faulty then......would recommend getting a new one bro.

Oil also is quite thick for your car as Beemerbro said - stick with a 5w or 10w full synthetic per oem specs......

I would also say do an engine flush but many people dont like doing that as it can cause issues to pop up especially on older vehicles where the sludge is keeping things from breaking lol.....

Thanks guys, il do the engine flush route with oil change and if still no luck then I'll have to buy a new pump
