Hi guys I messed up really bad. Purchased a e92 335i private sale. Drove it down from job yesterday. The car goes extremely well no power loss stutter jerks or anything. My only issue is it smokes mostly when going through the gears. The smoke is white. It I have not noticed any smoke in the freeway only when driving around. Car hush have a bigger inter cooler. 113000km on the clock. The guy I purchased the car from says it is normal and comes goes. I did do all the checks before purchasing I.e AA and so on. I really need help guys.

Thanks from reading the forum that's what picked as well the other was turbo. Any idea the cost of replacing the valve stem seals. My warranty only kicks in after a month.

The Mach I took it to said the Pcv needs to be changed but that is not the cause. He presumes it is the valve stem seals or might be the turbo. But unlikely due to no power loss and the white smoke is not there all the time. In fact when he drove it he could not see anything wrong until while we was talking the exhaust started to blow a it white smoke. Then I revved it abit to show him what I was talking about.

It is a Good Idea to service the turbo anyway, Strip it off and price a service with one of the turbo shops, if there is not too much damage 700 for the service if there is some most will charge you 2k to refurbish and replace the shafts. I used to service my turbos every 60,000 km. Make sure if they upgrade the interns that you pump enough fuel so you don't run too lean. So you may need a tune afterwards.

Thanks I will definitely look into that. My Mach quoted me 22k if it is the valve stem seals and he said it will be more if it is the turbo's. Does this sound right to anybody. He is busy stripping to what the problem could be...I am in durban.

Before you strip everything check you Coolant level you may have a leaking head gasket.. It may not be valve stem seals or coolant. Wither splutter you may have a leaking inter cooler pipe check that too and some fluid may enter through that pipe, either gear box oil or water. Sorry I was not thinking this morning.

Hi guys my Mach is going to strip the head on Monday and let me know what the actual cause could be... He is almost certain it is the valve stem seals and while there he will inspect the turbo's as well. Will let you guys know on Monday what he picks up.

It could be a number of things but most likely culprit is turbo seals .
Mine also turned out to be turbo seals.
Follow this which I've posted on another thread :

In all honesty he is going to sting you with the price, but he will find the fault.

Hi guys so just the final verdict...
The head was pulled out an seal was definetly worn badly(head is currently at the engineers)
The pcv valve is also cooked so installing a new one and the turbos had sporting of oil in them so changing them as well. This car is costing me a lot.
Anything else I should look out for while the head is stripped out?
Thanks for all the valued responses.

Get a carbon clean done while you at in.

If hes doing the valve stem seals then I would a assume a good mach will automatically do a carbon clean as he is stripping anyway.:tiptoe:

I was just gonna add before he stripped the head to check if the car is running with downpipes, no cats. They tend to make a car smoke intermittently.

Depending on how bad VSS are they should smoke between every gearchange , worse when pushing hard and on startup, especially overnight. Should Not be intermittent.

My 2c worth, anyway hope it gets sorted and you get to enjoy the car.
