Help needed E36

hi guys

i need some help with my e36 318is.

i have a strange knocking sound on the suspension some where and i cant find it.

normal driving the car is 100%
slow braking car 100%

the problem begins under hard braking. as soon as i hit the brakes the knocking is there and i can feel a slight knock through the floor at the accelerator pedal.

replaced the following:

control arms left and right
control arm bushes left and right
stabilizer links left and right

any advise on where the sound is coming from its driving me nuts :argh:

i'm thinking of taking the car to Syd's in PTA to have them check it out.

Is the sound coming from the front or the rear ?

The e36 is prone to rear shock mounts cracking ...

some days it sounds like the front and other days sound like the rear, all i can definitely feel the knock at the accelerator pedal.

is it possible for the front tower mounts to cause this ?

Just get your shock mounts al round checked and maybe your tie rods as well.

bring it around to my shop, discuss the issues with my suspension/alignment technician ..(he is a GURU on E36's)...the check up is for free

then we can diagnose and possibly quote you on the work required.

I'm not sure about how brakes work on a 318is but it seems like the problem maybe coming form the rear drums. Maybe one of the springs popped out and is causing the knock when braking.

Thinking about it now the witch was making the same type of noise when braking. It sounds almost like the front wheel is moving towards the back of the wheel arch(if that makes any sense)

Check/replace engine mountings

I recently also had a 'funny noise' problem and vibration(s) when cornering enthusiastically
When worn the engine and gearbox etc. can move around

Also check drives-haft support bearing

Might sound stupid but exhaust rubbers ?

Had this issue on my Opel 200is a month ago and thought it was suspension related ,later found out exhaust was rusted and rubbers were worn out..

that is the exact explanation, and it seems to be getting worse.

1.stripped the both rear brake setups last night and they look fine to me.
2.Checked the guibo and its 100%
3.Checked the drive shaft center bearing and there is no play
4. checked both rear towers
5. replaced both coils and shocks Rear
6. checked all the bushings on the sub assembly
7. had wheel alignment checked (was all screwed up)

i'm thinking i need to replace both engine mounts and gearbox mounts (might be replacing my box it's developed a ugly wine)

i'm all out of ideas, can u remember what u did to solve the issue on the Witch ?

thanks for the advise Mo, i know about that issue i had a 200ISE kadett those rubbers are a nightmare. i sold mine to get my hands on the Beemer.

To be completely honest had the problem till when she broke.
Will have a look at it again when I fixed her up and she is running again.

But one of the previous owners of the car was in an accident and she is leaning to the right slightly which I only found out after the new wheels and shocks, and my right brake discs keeps warping and making weird so have some more work ahead.

Will update once I've had a look. Till then I'll be watching you. :rollsme:
