Hi all,

My wifes mini is making a huge noise on start up. The noise continues for about 1 minute then gets softer and disappears. Its sounds very metalic, Like a metalic ticking sound almost like a fan blade hitting something. it seems to come from the top of the engine.

I took it to my local mechanic, who I dont think has any idea of what it is.
He told me to service it as it may be the hydraulics inside the engine.
I did the service and the noise is still there 2 grand later.

The car has 106000km and is a standard 1.6. 2008 model

I know mini is going to charge a fortune so if you know any experts please let me know. Or any suggestions.

Thanks

If Cooper S then it is the timing chain problem. Get a ne one fitted complete with tensioner and cam sprockets.

Could be a fault on the VVT system, have you had it diagnosed via OBD?

Aah 2008, no VVT. Not thinking....

Sounds like Tappets or a stretched timing chain. This is caused by a timing chain tensioner failure. It is hydraulically operated and eventually gives way. This in turn allows the chain to slap on the tappet cover and make a terrible noise.

Ok So I need to appologise to my local technician!:praise:

He was right :fencelook:

The service sorted out the problem the noise disapeared after 5 days, and the car is pulling nice and strong now! It seem there was a blockage in the hydraulics and it worked its way out with some additive!

Thank you very much Autoway Fourways!!!!!
