Help - My E46 320d is hurting

Hi Guys.

I haven't been on the forum for some time. Still driving my E46 320d F/L manual and I have an issue im hoping to get some input on.

The car currently has 250000kms, on the clock. I am however sure that it was wound back at some point in its life.

I have recently spent a fortune trying to get her back to how she should run after owning her for 6 years already.

Engine items attended to so far:
Crank Dampener Pulley
Vortex Crank Case Breather.
Swirl Flaps
Turbo
Engine and gearbox mounts
Clutch and Dual mass fly wheel.
Vacuum hoses
Expansion tank
EGR cleaned

Now this is the tricky part.

After doing the clutch and fly wheel, there was still a vibration / rough idle to the car.

It still pulls like a freight train but never felt quite right. Then she started to knock (I know it as pinging from my years as a petrol head, correct me if the term is wrong)

Every time I came onto boost and took my off the loud pedal it would knock followed by a huge plume of black smoke.

It became quite severe and I was worried about grenading the motor. The obvious culprit seemed to be the injectors so I had them pulled out and rebuilt.

When I got the car back, it still had the rough idle but pulled hard and smooth right through the rev range. Then about a week later it started knocking so badly that I could not even drive it.

It went back to my mechanic who pulled the injectors again. I took them to another specialist this time who told me the injectors had been re-built properly, but the calibration had been stuffed up horribly.

They spent a good amount of time on them and told me that if this car knocks again, there is no way it is from the injectors.

So we put them back in again and hoped for the best.

Oh joy, two days later I take it up to 4000rpm in 1st, hook second and nearly hit my head on the steering wheel. The car knocks at 4000rpm, cuts out and then comes back to life again. Every single time like clockwork.

The strange part is that if I take it to 4000rpm and wait until its back to 3500rpm before coming back onto the gas, it still cuts out.

Immediately afterwards it drives again like nothing ever happened. On start up it battles to idle for a few seconds and blows plumes of white smoke until warm. The rough idle persists though. The dampener pulley is 100% smooth.

There are no error codes aside from glow plugs. We have driven and had it cut out with my mechanics diagnostics tool plugged in and fuel pressure, boost pressure and voltage stay constant through out.

I have spent a lot on this car and have also redone the entire suspension but I dont know if I should spend a little more or cut my loses.

Its becoming quite a dangerous problem. If I try and overtake and miss judge it the car cuts out and leaves you in a really dangerous spot because its takes a while to build boost and get hauling again.

Any suggestions on things I could try?

SOB. Currently sitting on Louis Botha waiting for a tow. She just died on me. Maybe ill get a useful error code now.

My money is on fuel pump. Any bets?

could be a fuel pump issue. what you could also do is disconnect the maf and take it for a drive with the maf disconnected and see if it does the same thing again.

Fuel pressure is 100% and there are no errors.

If my mechanic sprays quick start into the intake it fires up no problem and then dies.

Seeing as we have been experiencing issues with the injectors we are going to pull them out....AGAIN!....and have them tested before we try anything else. :rage:

Turns out two of the injectors had failed again. Obviously one was wonky, causing the rough idle and cutting out. Then another failed leaving me stranded.

My brother passed away two weeks ago so i have been using his car for a while.

Despite my advice to him not to buy it. Its an E46 320d.................AUTO!!! :hammerhead:

So this car is still standing in pieces.

A compression test showed one cylinder was dead. We pulled the head and had it pressure tested and chemically cleaned. No problems at all on the head.

When re-assembling the head three hydraulic lifters were stuck so we replaced all of them.

The cylinder bores are clean and the pistons are fine.

So the head went back on, and compression is good.

Now two of the injectors are still not detecting on the ecu. We took them back to the engineers who tested them again and confirmed all is 100%

The ecu has been pulled out and sent in for testing. The programming sits in the Ram but when power is cut, it does not convert it to Rom so the settings are not saved. That is why two of the injectors are not running.

This really has become a painful exercise.
