Help me help a friend- 2 problems on e36

Hey guys!

I visited my friend last night and her 98 model e36 316i is giving two small issues:

1. her central locking locks/unlocks all doors except the right rear. The door needs to be locked/unlocked manually at the moment.

2. her outside temp display has suddenly stopped working. There is no longer a visible display. Could this be a light bulb inside the temp display?

Have checked all the fuses for both problems and they are fine.

Any suggestions? :fencelook:

hi,

the door actuator might be faulty causing it not to function anymore.
the temp display might just be in need of a globe.

if she can bring the car over to me ill take a look and see what it needs so we can sort it out for her.

Thanks for the offer Racing Snake but she is in the Cape. Will look into the globe so long and see what can be done about the door afterwards.

the actuator sits in a shyte position and is a 131tch to remove and replace .
The temp display may be moved out be sticking a finger under it above the open space below and moving the unit towards the gear lever .there are globes on the top side of the unit ( mine is full obc , I expect 316i to be similar , maybe not as many globes )
good luck .

It's similar for the 316i. You can check if it's the bulb by shining a flash light at various angles at the display (make sure it is on, you can toggle it by pressing the "Temp" button) - if you can see the readout it's a faulty bulb.

Here's a pic of the back of the display of a 316i. The bulb for the temperature display is indicated by the arrow:

Great stuff guys! :thumbs:Will see if I can sort out the temp display this weekend

Some auto spares shops might stock the bulbs. Please post back when you've got the door sorted.

Replaced all 5 bulbs in my cluster this weekend, so I have 3 spare/old bulbs. However, new ones are cheap: R15 plus VAT from the dealer.
