Calling all E36 owners with 18 button OBC!

Hi guys,

I really need your help so here is a much info as possible!

I have a '95 BMW (E36) 316i (M43B16) 5-sp manual, with DME v1.7.
It only has OBD1 with the 20p-pin "pacman" diagnostics connector inside the engine bay.

I decided to upgrade it to a 18 button OBC (onboard computer).

I've wired up everything and have managed to get the following functions working:
Consumption, Temp, Avg. Speed, Distance, Range, CODE, Limit, Timer, Clock, Date, Memo, Dimmer, Gong/Chime and the BC function on the new indicator stalk.

I have also installed a CCM (Check Control module).
I cannot for the life of me get the OBD to activate the CCM.
From my internet research, it appears that the OBD has a hidden Code 11 function that allows you to set a combination of "Einheit 1" and 2 values to tell the OBD what model your car is. eg BC and FF etc

I have "unlocked" the OBD and have tried *many* combinations of Einheit1 and Einheit2 values but only get a solid orange display or a "CHECK CONTROL INACT." / "SEE OWNER'S MANUAL"

The only wires currently conected on the CCM at the moment are on its WHITE plug with PINS 3, 5, 7 and 9 for now. (No wires on CCM black plug yet as these are for all the lights)

What I need is the following:
Can any of you please check your OBC Country setting? (Press the 1000 and 100 buttons in at the same time. Enter Code: 10). Choices are:
CND - Canada?
D - Deutchland
GB - Great Britain
F - France
I - Italy
J - Japan
US - USA
AUS/GOLF - Australia?

(I can only assume that we are on the GB option?)

If any of you have a 318, can you check your Einheit 1 / 2 values?
(I can PM you deatiled instructions on how to do this)

Here is what I've done (for those techies amongst you) :=):

X1070:
PIN 1-BRN/GRY----- ------Brake Switch (PIN 3/4 - Check Control Only)
PIN 2-BLU/RED------------Brake Switch (PIN 2/4 + CCM/X1074 (WHITE) PIN 9

PIN17-BRN ---------------------GROUND Tap onto X1071 PIN 13
PIN18-RED/YEL----------------POWER Tap onto X1071 PIN 8 (FUSE F31)

X1071:
PIN 1- BLK/VIO ---------------EWSII PIN 15
PIN 4- BRN/RED-------------- RED/YEL wire on TURN STALK
PIN 5- WHT/VIO-------------- Cluster X16- PIN 12 (TxD)
PIN 6- WHT/BLK--------------- X16- PIN 21 (might be vacant – CODE feature)
PIN 7- WHT/YEL-------------- X16- PIN 11 (RxD)

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Bud best to speak to Gizmo im sure hes played around with this before

Thanks Nikhil,

I see your current ride is a 1995 325i ::=): Could you perhaps check your country code for me? (Test code 10)

The body wiring harness in the 4cyl has less wiring than the 6cyl, I think the reason you can't get the CCM working is because you only have one plug going into it. Im pretty sure all must be connected.

Thanks for the reply Gizmo.

Could you check on your OBD what country code you have (Test Code 10) - the OBD does not have to be unlocked to do this.

Also, could you check what your Einheit 1 and 2 values are?
(Can give you instructions on how to do this by unlocking the OBD first)

All the other wires that are not connected up yet on the CCM are normally just closed looped circuits, that if broken, should tell the OBC that ALL of the bulbs / sensors have gone off / bulbs have blown. I suspect that I just need to marry up / pair the OBD to the CCM but there are just literally 1000s of combinations!

Anyway, on a side note... just saw your E36 mats for sale on your profile so sent you a PM as I'll take them off your hands.... :)

i think you gonna have to speak to Gert @ OBD Worx...

Unfortunately Gert is not able to assist with the OBD on the E36 - heck of a nice guy though. Thanks for lending me your ear Gert!

You're a braver man than I am. I gave up on my 18 button OBC dreams after I couldn't locate the second plug. I suspect not every 4 cylinder came pre-wired for it.

Ok, I finally made some headway.

I took X1070 PIN14-VIO/WHT and spliced it direct to PIN 6 on the CCM X1074 instead of taking it to Fuse F45.

It was only when I did a reset (Code 21) of the OBD unit that it finally came back with two warnings:

CHECK COOLANT LEVEL SENSOR
WASHER FLUID LOW.

These warnings disappeared when I earthed PIN 1 and 2 on the CCM X1074 plug until such time I install the physical sensors.

What is still a concern is that the CCM is not consitent. Sometimes when I turn on the ignition the OBD will tell me CHECK CONTROL INACT. and sometimes it will tell me CHECK CONTROL OK.

My OBD Country code is set to 8. AUS/GOLF
My Einheit 1 = 71 and Einheit 2 = FF

I have double-checked the wiring and all is seems ok. Anyway, now to start wiring up the rest...
