if you 6 ft + the KTM is better suited and handles very well 2 up.
The BMW is a bit of a lightweight with 2 up, if I where to Go BMW the GS1200 is the only way, the 800 is good in traffic mind you.

So I own a GS1200 LC and own many bikes and have done so for many years. I am 6'4" and also find super bikes just painful on the wrists...

The f800 is too light weight to be seen as a true competitor against the KTM. It is a good bike for a medium framed person, but for a big guy you are likely to over muscle the thing and end up on your ass..

The KTM is a great bike. It has an excellent pedigree, but ultimately lacks the refinement and execution of the GS1200. The GS is a bigger bike and suited my larger frame far better...

You can pick up used GS's in your price range AND they hold their value better than the KTM as well.

And finally riding a big GS is intoxicatingly enjoyable and quiet addictive... There is a good reason they were bike of the year last year.

With regards to mileage on the GS1200's, im seeing an average of between 30k and 50k on them.
How do these bike stand up to traveling?

What would be the best OdO reading to buy on a used one?

They take mileage really well... i have seen some very clean bikes with north of 80k on the clock. These are usually used as tourers so tend to have lots of "freeway" style km's.. As always its the type of mileage that is important... not necessarily the number. You want a bike that has not done tons of very abrasive off-road stuff.

Cheers

both are nice bikes, ktm looks bloody agressive

read about the BMW gs700/800 and 1200 in a recent car mag, where they tested them, the 800 around town isn't bad,but the best one out of the 3 was the 1200,good all rounder, which is the one I would go for.if not mistaken the 1200 is shaft driven.

as nice as a superbike is,i feel they age quickly compared to adventure/naked bikes
