Right, so the joy of maintaining a 10 year old e46 continues. This morning I am driving and suddenly hear this high pitched screech coming from the engine bay, shortly followed by a snap. I stop the car and call my local mechanic. We tow the car to his workshop, remove the engine covers and I find that my AC/water pump/alternator/powersteering, etc belts are shredded and the big pulley they sit on has come away from the engine :argh:

So where do I proceed from here? Is this an agents only part? Is replacement a DIY procedure?

You can see in the pics that the inner area of the circle is jagged where it was separated from the rest of the part. The jagged material actually feels like silocone...weired!

common failure on diesels.. plenty places sell pirate make crank pulleys.. they about 5k from the stealers..

the crank pulley is rubber damped, i have come to the conclusion that its overtightening of the belts that cause these failures..

Yep, bmw somerset want R4750. Cliftons M3 want R1750 for a new part. Anyone done this as a DIY before?

I would say find good quality replacement parts, you can even try maybe Goldwagen etc and only if you have the knowledge and tools do a proper job then do it as a diy. Remember we only realise how much we need our cars until theyve gone wrong.

I reckon if someday I buy a used BMW diesel this will be one of the first things that I will replace just to play safe - such a common thing to fail, and very little way of knowing when it will...

It shouldn't be that hard a DIY. Probably need to remove the radiator and grille for access, then just the crankshaft bolts. Check the correct torque on the bolts! DON'T FORGET TO BLEED THE COOLING SYSTEM! Not too bad.:ty:

Just had the parts fitted at Mech 5 Auto in Gardens. Was a fairly quick and reasonable. These guys seem to be an "out of warrentee" BMW workshop.

I had the car towed there on a flatbed truck by Gus who owns Dynamic Towning. If anyone wants a tow in Cape Town, look up Dynamic Towning. He is very careful with your property and offers off peak rates. So glad to see a tow truck driver who doesnt have a pimped up bakkie or look like a thug!

was going to add for future referance, this is not a DIY job! unless you have all the right tools.. the pulley needs to be locked with a bmw special tool that interlocks with the crown on the pulley, and the bolt is torqued to crazy specs.. a bastard to get loose..

i recommend you farm this job out..

@netercol - how can you blame "over-tightening the belts" I would assume that the diesels have normal BMW tensionsers ?

I do agree that the mechanical ones in particluar are rediciously tight, hell that spring could lift the bloody car, but we have to concede that the engineers designed the tensioners correctly ?

I like the pimped out bakkies but they seem to be a dieing breed... then again ive always wanted to have an icecream truck that has added base to the song
