hey hope you've sorted the problem- do let us know so we can learn.

but if not, you really should have a proper diagnostics done to pinpoint the problem. While the crank angle sensor can cause starting problems, it is not advisable to guess this sort of thing cos there are loads of components that can result in this problem right up to the DME itself, although unusual. It's cheaper to have a diagnosis done and fix/replace the correct part than fish around and incur unnecessary expenses

Either vanos related or position sensor related.

Crank sensor does not always show on diagnostics on early cars.

Buy a veepeak or other elm327 diagnostics dongle. They are cheap under $20 and there’s tons of free apps that will let you read live data. The way I fix cars with intermittent problems is monitor the live data. You will be able to view all your sensors readings and then you will have a better chance of tracking it down. I would monitor crank and cam sensors readout with live data when it is acting up and if it’s a sensor issue you will most times get no output. Occasionally they will give crazy readouts.
Good luck

I hear you that you've had a diagnostics twice with no error codes. But you don't say where or who did the diagnostics. I trust the BMW dealer systems more cos they are designed specifically for those cars. Other diagnostics software like INPA and others are very good but may have limitations. I don't know what software BMW dealers or specialist agents use. But i can tell you from experience that not all diagnostic software is reliable.
I would also speak to a technician specialising in BMW engines as he may have come across this sort of thing before so will know where to look.
In the meantime I would change the crank sensor, but I'm wondering if this might not be related to the fuel preparation and supply systems where the engine is "flooded" when hot and then needs time to clear:eek:mgwaiting:You would smell the petrol tho if this were the problem...just a thought:eek:mgwaiting:

Issue sounds Sensor related

A guy with a 330CI came to me few weeks ago..
His car did the same... Wont start when hot.
He needed to cool off before it would start and drive..
Sometimes the car even cut out on him while he was driving...

Scanned and it showed Crank sensor.. Replaced that and he is driving fine last time i heard

Maybe just get her booked in at a BMW Mech. Drive it nice and warm before going to the mech. Then when you pull up at the workshop, the problem can mos be replicated. Then Mech can scan it and Most it will cost you then is R250. But scan it while the problem is there

good luck bud

On my polo it was a faulty temperature sensor...........overfuelling when hot i assume or something like that.

Changed it and it was fine, maybe check your temperature sensors

had same problem with a friend of mines e36 m coupe , did not want to start when hot and had the occasional misfire when on normal temperature , I got him a used ECU , problem solved , must actually get somebody to check out the old ECU to see what the problem was.
