Happy tappets...

Hi there guys.

I've got a 318i e30, about 220 000kms on the clock.

I've started hearing tappet noise, in the beginning it went away as I drove, now I hear it all the time, except when I'm driving mid to high revs. Sometimes it comes and goes, sounds like it is a sound getting closer and loud; then its starts to go softer and away, it usually goes on like this for a few minutes or till I start to drive faster...

Has anyone had the same problem or may know what's causing it?

Thx

I had a 1988 E30 318i with 350 000km on clock that had tapping tappits, made a tick tick tick noise constantly. Took it in and had them adjusted somehow(was not too into the technicalities in those days). Sorry i cant be more specific..

I'm pretty sure that the service interval on those engines is 10kms, in which case your oil is more than liely not along life oil, and has more than likely broken down.

My suggestion would be to have that car serviced before anything else ;)

Check in the service book and stick the recommended spec.

Jees dude, 20k kms between servicing is :nono: :)

20w50 non-synthetic oil, and do it now! I wouldn't be surprised if your tappets need to be adjusted as well.

I did it on 200 000 something, I'll do it now again, but I think I'll have to get someone to have a look at the tappets for me...

Ask Mike@Liquimoly for some advice, but first: +1 on the servicing

(BTW, I read the tread heading and thought: Someone in Brakpan won the lottery...)

What year is your 318i and what motor does it have? The M10 or M40 motor?

Get a basic service, new oil and filters. Then drive it a bit to see if there is an improvement.

If no improvement:
...And you have the M10 motor, you might get away with having them adjusted.
...And you have the M40 motor, you might have to have the hydraulic lifters replaced. They're not to expensive, should be less than R1000.

But first get the service and then let us know. We can also take a look at the hookup on the 6th

I'm currently on 261 000 km. I've heard of 318's going way beyond 300 000 km's
