ok where to start.
I bought a 2001 E46 320i with 123 000km 2.5 month ago.
It's my first Beemer

So far it's had done to it --

New oil sensor
Major service
valve cover gasket
New Tyres
Wheel alignment
New power steering pump
New radiator
Fuel sensor calibration
New windscreen wiper sprayer motor

Total Cost = R16135

What it still needs to have done

New Torque converter
New Fuel Pump
New Lower control arm bushes
1 x wheel bearing
New Front disks

I think I should just sell the Fing car..
Whats your
thoughts?

So, if you were to sell the car, what would you buy then?

With your current car at least you know what problems there are and what has been replaced. Selling won't get you your R16k back, plus you won't get back what you paid for the car, so is it really worth it to sell?

Bear in mind that some of the stuff you're changing now is gonna be good for the next 50K to 100K KM, whereas another car may still need this work done again ...

Jees, thats unlucky. I've had my 2003 320i for over 3 yrs now and inclusive of my strut brace, brakes and tyres (2 sets) I dont even think I've spent that much.

Yeah true.
I am lucky that I took out an insurance out on the car.
So it's paid for 10k of the 16k

I am just worried about something else breaking after all this work has been done.
So I was thinking of doing the TC and selling the damn thing and going back to honda.

felt the same way you did about my E46 318i (FL) and i sold it at the first best opportunity. Got me a better -looked-after 325i and spent almost nothing on it due to the motorplan.

so sometimes it's better to cut your losses and move on. (IMO)

I agree with msm, dont sell, your car :nono:

"its better to know the devil you know than the devil you dont"

I lost more on my Ford in 9 months than what i paid for my 1997 316i cash... :censored:

Trust me, i know... :slap:

@Brown Fox...

I hear you, I bought my first car last year - 2001 E46 318 SportPack and guess what?:

I had to buy:

New Gas Shocks (Sports suspension)
New BrakePads all around (Need to replace front disks)
Lights started going off... Front Headlamps, fogs, and rearlamps.

Now, as the guys on the forum may know... I need to check my Fuel Pump and a couple of other senses that the guys suggested.

@Sankekur.... knows that I need to get the codes read on my car due to high fuel consumption and tendencies to turn off on first start. ***I will keep you guys posted once I've done it in the next week or so.***

So in a nutshell, you get lucky buys and you also get unlucky buys. But I wouldn't recommend that you sell it though... You will have more confidence on the car when you have fixed all these things.. Trust me, I'm in the same boat.

That's a damn shame.
Although i spent 22k on a '87 model 325i shadowline.. like a fool i sold it cos the bills just kept on coming and the new owner is reaping all the benefits. All he did since was spend money on 2 sets of tires and general servicing...5 years ago!!!:banghead:

I spent +/- 40k on my e46 318 F/L in the last 9 months...had her 8 years from new, shit only started once I got the car after school in 08 :) Still wont sell her for another year or so until I'm 100% sure of another newer bm purchase...even with this 35k i spent, add it on to the value now of about 75k = 110k. What can you buy new or even demo for that price with ABS,cruise control, full house, adequate power for student, german engineering, solid gorgeous looking car etc etc? Nothing comes close and I have grown too accustomed to our Love/Hate relationship :slap:

haha when i say love/hate i mean she loves to hate me :)
But you know what, that feeling when she's 100% good and drives like a dream makes it all worth it (however brief the moment lasts until something else breaks).

If it wasnt for my first BMW, I would have never bought another one after the horrid experience I had with my 320d. Hang in there BrownFox, they are brilliant cars, you just need to have one that has been looked after from day one.

Dont get me wrong when I say looked after I dont mean driven by a 80yr old lady :) I drive the hell out of my car and it just keeps giving back, 3+yrs on and I still smile every time I drive her :)

I'm out in parklands and pretty handy when it comes to DIY stuff, so if you need some help just shout.

What do the error codes say?

You live in the same neighbourhood, just pop in and lets read those codes. I'm near builders warehouse.
