Hi guys,

So lately I acquired some quite high mileage, its the highest I`ve ever done with any of my 5 cars, usually I just sell the at 160k or below, depending on how happy I am with them, wrote the last one off and didnt have much cash so got me this e36 318iS Motorport II,it was at quite high mileage but now even higher, what do you recon should I look out for?

This car is my baby and I`m not planning to sell her at all,I still need a car for a year or so and then I can buy a new beemo, and then go turbo route on her,she has a few probs:

1-Power steering whining when I turn either way sometimes after quite a hard corner, sometimes right after startup.

2-Some squeeking sound coming from the right rear suspention as soon as I go over small bumps or turn left with weight in the back.

3-I think my maf is giving issues or dirty, what are the symptoms?Had the codes read, nothing comes up,replaced crabk vent valve, but for some reason it kinda dies sometimes under acceleration,as if its struggling to breathe?

1) I had the same, had the pump reconditioned & got the car last night but still a bit whiney, rick540 said it might be a loose inside of a pipe causing the whine. First try getting the power steering fluid flushed & replaced, might fix the problem

2) Could be the actual shock, have a similar noise on the E46 & have been told its usually gabriel shocks that make the noise

3) Bad maf will give bad or jerky acceleration @ full throttle.. try unplugging it & see if it runs any better or same, if it runs differently then maf is probly broken.

and with a car with that high mileage, make sure to service it every 12 months or 10 000km's use BMW filters & good Quality oil.
& maybe get the rubber bushes, tie rod ends, etc checked..
Also get the Gearbox & diff oils flushed & replaced
& get brake fluid replaced every year as well..

Then it should run for many many more happy KM's

at least u still got almost 3/4 tank of petrol
Hey,at age 20 thats impresive!lol

Thanks Andrewbuch,I have been to the only BMW Repair centre close to me a few times about the maf,he said its the crank vent valve, cost me R900 to replace:banghead:,And it has jerky acceleration when put under load,I`ll get to that maf.

My shocks are quite new, dunno whats the issue there, but I`m sgona replace the shock and get it done with,

Also what oil would you guys reccomend for that mileage?Om not updated on liquid technologies

biggest problem you'll have is that your odometer will run out of numbers! :spit:

seriously: just do the regular servicing and mabe have the cooling system overhauled (new water and thermostat)

Your milleage isnt that high. If she is not smoking, or taking oil (more than normal), no knocking. Then no need for a swop or recon.

If these cars are maintained, they are capable in excess of 500000km.

I use Castrol Slx in my 2000 318i. I use her daily, and she is now on 297000km. the car has full service history from day one and if anything is faulty it is replaced as soon as possible.

diesel electric for the MAF, dont waste time with no name brand ones.. get the bosch one & be done

The noise might not be from the shocks.. Get it checked out before you replace. My noise is from the shocks & they are just over 1 year old.

I dont know what oil to use in a high mileage car..
