Good Idea , Bad idea ?

Hi Guys,

I am going today to look at an E36 M3.
not sure they year , but its got 230,000km.

He says its in relatively good condition inside and out.
I have seen two pics, and the car looks good.

The issue is he isnt driving it at the moment as it has a bearing knock.
It starts and runs, but he doesn't want to drive it like that.

If I take the car, am i asking for a shit storm of trouble or is it not that scary?

I had bearing knock two years ago, on my 3.0l. But i decided to redo the entire motor bottom up, for peace of mind. Never had any issues after. Done at Savspeed.

If you just want to repair, costing is going to depend on whether your crank is scored, and how bad. If they can cut it, or if you will have to get a replacement crank. So it all depends on amount of damage, and only way to determine that is to open her up.

3.2l cranks seem easier to get than the 3.0l, at the time i was looking.

If car is clean , new second motor should cost in the region of 40-50k , so 40k for the car , add another 40k for 2nd hand motor can possibly be a good deal for a clean E36M

I wouldnt even try to recon the broken motor. Costs will never end IMO

If the suspension and everything else (including the interior and bodywork) is in 100% condition then I will have it for R30k.

Considering that it has a bearing knock it is probably on the original shocks and bushes, the tyres are probably the cheapest you can get, it has had a fender bender here and there then I really won't buy it.

Its a 2 door. so the 3L motor.

Went to see it yesterday. Seems to be in good condition inside and out. Guy did take care of it. He just ran out of money to fix the engine at the end.

maybe get quotation on fixing/second hand motor then way out the options.the thing with a second hand motor is,its a devil you dont know.

If this does not fit in with your total overall budget,negotiate further and it will all be in reason as you will have quotations with you.

Use the worst case scenario if building up current motor so you will have a quotation for that scenario

At the price you getting it for i would take it, repair would cost you in the 25k region but then you will know exactly whats in that engine and its condition after the rebuild, if done correctly should be strong and last you a good few years more

problem with a car that is not moving is that there may be other hidden problems such as diff, electrical and suspension so becareful! otherwise repairing may not be as expensive as some people make it out to be!

Maybe.....if the rest of the car is in great condition, slap a new engine in it...

But generally, stay away from cars like that.
