I need some help/advice please to resolve an irritation in my car:
Story so far:
My driver side door stopped unlocking when pressing the key fob remote: https://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=78132
I was forced to use the blade part of the key to insert and turn the door lock manually to unlock it.
So in December, I replaced the driver side door lock actuator at BMW.
Originally I was quoted in the region of R 3000 just for one actuator. I eventually phoned a number of BMW dealerships and one told me that there was a recall on that part and there is a replacement kit with both actuators for R 900 total. (plus R900 labour to fit). Happy days.
It worked fine for the first 3 months (Dec - Feb) and the problem came back again... and the door would not unlock for about 3 months (Mar - June).
I finally got round to taking it in yesterday and (Murphy's law), they say the door is unlocking perfectly (maybe because yesterday was one of the coldest mornings ever). They say they did more diagnostics and the GM module is blown, causing intermittent failure, and that I need to order a new one from Germany and will cost me in the region of R 10 000, and then the car needs to be re-coded.
I've looked on the internet and this GM5 module seems to be a common problem. I was wondering if any other Fanatics have had this issue and how did you solve it?
Do you know any local independent specialists who can fix it? Or maybe source a 2nd hand part? etc
I have a 2004 E85 Z4 3.0, and I am based in Southern Suburbs, Cape Town.
