I've always admired the 130i

Hardly ever see em on the roads these days.

Love the care and attention you've given this beauty.

Well done man

Car looks awesome... Exactly like mine with the exception of 2 more doors..

... +1 on the question above, really need to know where to find this except from the dealers. I am also looking for a sound upgrade from my professional system, but want to stay Plug & Play.

Unfortunately the only place I know of locally would be the dealers. There are options to import a kit, but the courier charges, along with the duties and taxes make it uneconomical.

Been a while since my last update - things have just been too hectic.

After much procrastination, this arrived a few weeks ago

All the way from the UK. One of my moments of madness (again), but oh well. This particular piece has a seasoned history. It was initially on a supercharged 130i for about 7000miles, before being fitted to a stock 130i for a further 12000miles, I am now the 3rd owner. Consider it broken in... so it should sound the business from the first start-up.

It had its fair share of rust and road grit spattered all over the show:

Fortunately we had some extra hands staying over at our house the day it arrived, so I decided to quickly unbox it to check it out, along with giving it a "quick" clean.

Needless to say the cleaning dragged on, and 3.5hours later I was ready to pack up for the evening. I did manage to clean it up nicely though:

I’m still not 100% happy with the tips. There are some swirl marks and scratches which I was unable to get out with Brasso / regular polish. Any suggestions? Perhaps a dedicated metal polish?

The seller also included the old clamp he used. Unfortunately it has seen better days, and got a bit squashed during shipping. I’ve managed to sort it out though, so it looks quite clean as well. I’ll probably try clean it up some more before fitting.

The exhaust has been sitting in the box for a few weeks, the only reason I unpacked it over the weekend was to check if it also got flooded following the recent rains. Thankfully all was well. Now to just find the time to get to fitting it. I was half procrastinating on this front, thinking I would first get a GoPro for some before and after video clips, but at this stage, budget does not allow for such things….

Here is a quick clip showing how the valve in the LHS pipe works:
Exhaust valve operation

In other news, my rear brakes are also due for replacement, so need to sort that out first before faffing with the exhaust.

@Mods: you may want to move this thread to the showroom section.

Update time:

The beginning of 2017 has been quite busy on the car front - getting things done which have been sitting on the shelf for months.

First thing which required attention on the 130i was the brakes. The rears were well-worn, and needed replacement.

I decided to purchase everything at the same time, before I spent the money on other things, haha.

A trip to the local BMW dealer secured the following:

Front discs:

Rear discs:

I decided to future-proof them to some degree, so sent them to Vari Racing to be slotted and heat-treated. This was the result:

IMG_8876%20Large_zpsal8kcdox.jpg

Moranor also helped out in getting some Textar pads and brake wear sensors:

When it came round to fitting them, I was unable to find my lock nut key. Either it was lost the last time it was at the dealer, or when it last had tyres fitted (as I have not needed to remove the wheels in recent times).

Anyway, I had to get a new one, so I coughed up for it:

IMG_9412%20Large_zpstom7q3id.jpg

The rear brakes were due for replacement (the fronts still have a bit of life left, so I will do these at a later stage).

Here are some pics of the rear setup:

IMG_9633%20Large_zpscpfo3uj4.jpg

Pulling the disc off, revealed the handbrake shoes, with no real wear at all:

The old disc next to the new one:

Pads and retaining clip:

IMG_9647%20Large_zpsdsmsy4pc.jpg

I can also confirm that the OEM pads which were removed were Textar pads.

Fitted:

IMG_9661%20Large_zpszk2uct0z.jpg

So far so good, there have been no squeaks or squeals, and everything appears to have bedded in nicely.

Sadly - my locking nut which was 48 hours old grew a pair of legs and walked off again! So I've organised (another) replacement from John.

Then onto some fun stuff, I had a few hours of free time (with no kids or wife in the area), so I decided to pop the car onto the ramps and change the rear muffler to the BMWP Muffler which I purchased last year.

Some pics of the stock setup:

Driving impressions:

So far so good. On cold startup, it has a much throatier sound, but when it settles down into the warm idle, you barely hear it at all. Driving around at low rpms and partial throttle, there is a lovely burble and "overlap" of the sounds on each gear change. For those of you into cooking / baking, the easiest way I can describe it is like when you fold cream / whipped egg whites into a cake mixture - now if you imagine the exhaust sounds are the egg whites, its as if these are being blended into each other.

Full throttle runs are a different story. There is a noticeable roar from the back, particularly when crossing past 5000rpm. It really is awesome. It is not overly intrusive in the cabin either, the best way to enjoy the sound is from outside the car. On the overrun, there are some reminders of BMW exhausts of past models - it reminds me a little bit of my uncles old E30 325i.

There is also some mild snap, crackle and pop now and then, which was less apparent on the stock exhaust.

In summary, having thought about it, this type of mod is fitting in line with the other mods available from BMW Performance. It is a subtle, but noticeable difference. It is not in-your-face or intrusive, and ultimately just makes the smile your dial that little bit broader.

In a similar fashion as the BMW PPK kit for the N54/N55 engines only bumps up power slightly - it is noticeable (whereas there are other tunes which unlock much bigger gains). The same can be said for the exhaust. It just adds that little bit extra, as opposed to full aftermarket systems which really unlock the decibels (refinement is another story).

I've created some videos, which I will upload in due course. I just need to get the file sizes down to a manageable level.

Real nice uprgades bud, and i like the fact that you are keeping it OEM and using the BMWPerformance parts.

Now when is a video of that exhaust coming?

Nicely done bud! Love to read these threads and appreciate the vehicles :coolShake:

Ok, managed to do some fiddling to get the smaller videos uploaded.

As Nick eluded to earlier, I purchased the GoPro he was selling a few weeks ago.

Here's my first efforts at capturing and editing of some footage. The sound is best enjoyed using earphones, or a decent hifi system. Also the videos don't fully capture the sound due to limited quality (unless it's set to stupid resolution and file size).

Cold start:
[video=youtube]

Partial throttle:
[video=youtube]

Full throttle:
[video=youtube]

Happy listening....
