I drove the 540i at launch and REALLY enjoyed it. However, the 520d I had for a few days after that did nothing for me especially considering the price. However, I also had quite a 'poverty-spec' example but that said, creature comforts wouldn't make up for the feel... I'd drive a couple of different engine options and decide. If you are spending that much anyway then a better motor would trump a few of the more useless creature comfort being ticked any day.
