Fuel saving tips

Hi guys. I thought with the fuel price going up AGAIN next week we all might share some fuel saving tips or things you have done to your car to save a bit of fuel. Im sure with so many members here there are bound to be some good tips!

If you've got a "tractor" (diesel) do a search for a special that Promotec offered a few weeks ago, that should vastly improve your fuel consumption.

I was quietly considering it, but money is a bit in short supply and I am scared of "tinkering" with my "old" diesel at this stage...she runs smoothly enough and I don't want to upset the balance and harmony

I added injector cleaner to my last tank. Fuel economy with that tank was crap, but since my latest fuel ups it has become more economical.

Avoid the traffic.. that's the GP fuel killer :fencelook: don't drive in eco either it needs to rev higher in stop go traffic so keep it in comfort.. my findings thus far with my daily tractor

1. Make sure your car is in perfect running order.
2. Avoid acceleration as much as possible. Maximize constant speeds.

I added injector cleaner to my last tank. Fuel economy with that tank was crap, but since my latest fuel ups it has become more economical.

I have added octane booster in the past, don't know if it is my imagination but I was sure that my fuel consumption was better. Maybe someone who is more in the know with this type of thing can tell us if these additives like the injector cleaner, valve ease, octane booster etc. actually help with fuel economy.

Only tip I would give you is to drive with "live reading" on your OBD. I've noticed it's not always better driving at lower RPM. So I tend to drive with the OBD to see when is the best time to shift. :rollsmile: Bad habit and good habit at the same time.

NF Ultra definitely makes a difference with the 1M, but with a N/A 6 not so much.

If driving an auto:
- Stick it into "N" when at a robot

I agree on maintaining constant speed.

Always be aware of you car's eco gauge.

Make sure tire pressure is optimal.

I find that my car likes to shift down and keep the revs up if I'm on a downhill at either constant speed or decelerating. So now if I know it's gonna happen I put it into sport and shift to 5th gear to keep the revs down.

Thats a retarder function IIRC, my dad's 540 had it, quite cool :rollsmile:

Though if you're going down a hill and it shifts down its probably not using all that much fuel as you are going down a hill and its doing that to control a speed... I think :fencelook:
