fuel pumps

so guys - i was told my ecu is dead because my car was not fueling:blab:

it has a new crank angle sensor and a new cam angle sensor but does not start. Yesterday i had some free time and decided to check her out. Here's what i found:

- fuel pump does not turn on when i turn the ignition.
- fed 12v to pump - it went on momentarily
- with the pump on the injectors sprayed in sequence(ECU surely cant be faulty then?)
- The pump dies after a minute or so when in the tank but runs constantly when out of the tank (not submerged)

Symptoms of a faulty fuel pump? what else?

Did you check the wiring that leads to the fuel pump, is the fuel pump fuse(blue fuse) in good order??
If all those are fine it might be a faulty fuel pump, i was quoted R1200 for a new pump at Bemows ( Pretoria) but before you buy 1 i rather advise you try and get your hands on a pump just to test.

I had a similar problem but it turned out the wiring was the problem.

Good luck bra!!

You get a Bosch pump for over R1000 from Diesel electric . Does pump not run for a while until pressurised ?

I ran 12v straight to the pump - it would start running then just stop untill i disconnect and reconnect the power source - so i think im sure it has something to do with the pump:nonono:

would a walbro 225LPH in-tank be a better option?

my 328i only has one - under the backseat driver side. dont know how long they last but it really leaves you stranded when it fails.

probly depends on whether or not you kept your tank above the reserve line for most of its life

How many fuel pumps does the 328i have ?

How long does it last ? years/mileage

Im sure the do packup but i haven't heard of that happening to be honest but im sure many people have experienced problems with them and if im not mistaken i think from the 320i up to the 328i they take the same type fuel pump, depending on the year models only the the housings and fitting change, im sure the M3 has a special pump!

it is possible that the pump has a pressure switch off inside, some mechanical means of sensing that the pressure is too high, try giving it power directly on the pump without the fuel pipes connected(let it run into a bucket or something.)

if it keeps running then, i would suggest looking at relay/wiring.

Before I took ownership of my 328i, the previous owner was left stranded once and it was a fuel pump failure. Its not that expensive though.... about R1500 from the stealers.

The fuel pump under the back seat im aware of, why I'm asking is because when I had my exhuast done, underneath the car there was a cylinder shape container that looked like a fuel pump.

thats the fuel filter - fitted in line on the fuel line under the car:thumbs:

very good idea. honestly, i thought something to that extent but couldnt figure out how to test. will give it a shot. Now what about a Walbro pump?

Yip thats a fuel filter, i got shot in the ear once with fuel while trying to remove it when doing a service, hurt like hell.....:biglol:

If your pump does that, it is either it overheats and cuts out, or even the fuel relay is acting out. Test the fuel relay first, even try to jump the fuel pins on the relay plug to test the pump directly.

good plan, check pump and wiring in one go.

I would suggest checking to see if there is a break in a wire, by that I mean, using a test meter, check if the positive wire has a current during ignition sequence. Also check if the ground is not broken using the diode test function (disconnect the battery when doing this).

Our e46 had a faulty ground for the fuel pump, it would cut out while driving or on hot days, due to expansion the wire would come loose from the ground block/point in the boot.

As for me, one of my level sensors is still not working, and I haven't (attempted) to fixed it, don't you just love BMWs.

Speak to Danie, he specialize in fuel pumps, I bought a Walbro pump from him 2 years ago for the 535i that I had and it never gave me a problem again.

the fuel pump will generally switch on for a few seconds then switch off before starting the car. this is to clear any air locks in the system and build up pressure.

this is normal with most makes of cars.

once the car starts the pump should run constantly.

as the guys say , check all wiring, connections, fuel pump relay, fuse and also check if the fuel pump is turned on by the ecu(if so, check the wiring)

An Update - The impellers inside the pump = dead. The filter had a huge leak so i think something got sucked up and caused the damage. Bought a new Bosch pump only and fitted it to the existing bracket(float and everything). Car turned over first time.

Its strange how quickly she starts now. As soon as i think of turning the key i swear she starts. It use to take a couple of swings but now its almost instant. Im happy with the result.:joy:
