Fuel Gauge stuck on empty even though there's fuel ??

Have a look in the hidden menu in the cluster. There is a menu to read out fuel level readings. May give more of insight.

Otherwise, diagnostic code read - while you're at it try read out the tank level directly using INPA.

Wow, talk about a thread revival!

My brother has the same problem but on his 1998 E39 528i which suddenly also showed empty even though he was convinced it had petrol in. Anyway, i drove the car down from Upington to Hartenbos with the gauge showing empty but filled up every 400 - 500kms and got there without problems. Still have to find the problem though, so would very much like to hear if the problem got solved by the thread poster?

Hey guys!

So yesterday I am driving, have about half a tank of fuel and next thing the fuel gauge just drops to empty and the red "low on fuel" light goes on. The car still has a little under half a tank now and yet, this morning, I turn the ignition to the first turn, and it still shows empty (and light still on). The needle doesnt even move :dunno:

This ever happen to anyone? I did check the fuse list but there doesnt seem to be a fuse for the fuel gauge....

Answer is quiet simple change your Petrol Pump I've had the same situation before.....

You are lucky this only happened once though. With the guys with the 540's, this thing happens with EVERY TANK...

On our E36, the wire attached to the float sensor came loose/broke where it bends. Easy fix.

Or like in Get Smart - KaFreakinboom! :roflol:

Saw another car where the float for the sensor leaked, letting fuel into the float, so also indicating an "always empty" reading.

Thanks guys...hopefully its the later and a full tank of fuel will solve it...will ask the pump attendant to bounce the car up and down while he fills it to try and stir things up in there a bit. Will let you know...:thumb:
