The part boxed in the blue rectangle is your exhaust solenoid - assuming you have an M52/4 engine (non-M3 E46 323i and above).

I have the N42B20 engine...I just checked the location of it online, I'll check it out 1st thing in the morning and report back...

Ah, in that case,

Did you check this out:

From just what I've seen on the net, you may want to check your cam chain as well - it's not easy but may solve your problem if your symptoms match up.

I'll check out the vanos connectors first, then move onto other possible faults, things seem to be moving from one part to the next, soon I'll be replacing everything to cure one problem :flyfun:

After you changed your spark plugs and fuel filter has the hesitation returned/occurred since then or where they put back without being changed?

The n42 motor is really a problem child in my opinion, common issues with a million different fixes, you issue is definitely electrically related as it is an intermediate problem, unfortunately there won't be simple remedy and it will be a process of elimination to cure the problem...

Keep us in the loop as to the progress of your fixes...

Goodluck

i just read this thread and have a few things to add
1. haynes manual says the fuel filter must be changed on second inspection II, i.e. more or less 150-160k kms
2. just for info, the 25000km interval that counts down, actually monitors how much fuel you use. when you've used 2500litres fuel, it will be on ZERO.
3. you have a 318, and most of the info on the web is for 6cylinder e46's.
the disa valve someone showed you, your car does not have one. 318s has a throttle body. its not the same as the e46 cylinders.

how is your car oil usage?
i would suggest also looking at your crank ventilation valve.

It actually does have a DISA valve: http://www.e46fanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?p=12998223

But not in the place I originally said, the 318i seems to be in a different place, and as far as I know all cars have throttle bodies ?

But I agree with miek, the CVV/ PCV /CCV / OIL SEPARATOR VALVE is an issue on the bmw's, this is easy to fix and diagnose, it sits at the back of the engine on top, if you take it out there will be a little wheel/turbine, usually they stick and the inside collapses.

This does make a huge difference in throttle response and could most possibly be your issue.

Wow. That's a lot to take in...thanks guys, I'll only be able to continue inspection in 2 weeks time. For now I've checked the vanos connectors and the crimps seem fine...sprayed electrical cleaner onto the male/female connectors just to ensure clean surfaces. Sprayed this into my mass air flow sensor as well. No change in performance.

Please stay posted to this thread as I will be reporting back here when I get round to giving full attention to this issue...thanks for all the input, much appreciated! I'll use your suggestions upon next inspection... :praise:

PS how often is the car due for a new air filter?

The link is for a e46 pre facelift, which has a m43TU engine(1.9 liter 8valve sohc).

The N42B20(2 liter 16valve dohc) engine of the facelift e46 318 is a valvetronic motor, and as far as my knowledge goes does not have a idle control valve.

the idling is controlled by the lift and timing of the valves.
