Fuel Consumption

Hi
I have a 318i 2000 A Preface-lift,

Car using 15lt / 100 km instead of 7 lt / 100 km, I've been told that the knock sensor is faulty, causing the timing to read incorrectly, leading to heavy consumption, does this sound correct, or can you help me?

Depends on driving style. But I would have thought the 318i was slightly better on the economy than that.

the problem with the 318i or my e36 316i is that the motor is not powerful enough to move the heavy body. so in theory the smaller engine should be lighter on fuel it has to work harder to get the car moving.

we had a e46 325i touring and its consumption was better than the e46 318i..

Driving style does play a major role as well.

put a 318i on the highway, set cruise control to the national speed limit and it will sip 7l/100km but in town driving its worse. my e36 i also get about 350K's out a tank, drove my moms e46 318i auto this last week and the consumption was sitting at 17.6l/100km for in town driving..

So i should not complain about my car returning 10.8L/100km (E36 328i Manual).

Our E46 330iA returned about 11L/100Km in town driving.

@ Andrew. Approx what mileage you getting on a tank from the '05 318 Auto? Just curious coz i always complain about the 450-500km I get outa mine. (12.5 - 13.3 l/100km majority town driving)

Got a new corsa there bud?

It all depends who drives it. With me its about 350. Doesnt matter which one of our 3s i drive its about 350kms. 99% of my driving is in traffic, in town, residential areas, no highway at all, so always accelerating an braking. With my mom driving its about 450 i would say. On the open road i got 650 from less than half a tank.. Maybe my right foot is heavier than my moms? Anyway i enjoy the drive..

I also thaught that 15l/100km is way too much for a 318i. My e46 328i gets about 450 - 500km out of a 60L tank. And i do alot of town driving. Glad you found the problem bud.

I got 600 to 650 on my 93 E36 318is and I drove her hard. My 325i gets average of 13-14l / 100km... It really sucks!

Wow, some eye opening figures on this thread.

When I had my E46 318i (pre F/L) I used to average 650km on a tank. Since I changed to the E46 320i (F/L) I average 500km on a tank. Considering that the 320i is a 6 cyclinder its not too bad consumption. Both cars were used mostly for daily work commutes and in traffic (Durban).

@Andrewbuch - take the steel caps out of your right shoe to improve fuel consumption :)

The consumption of the 2000 318i should come down. As its only been 60kms since installing the obc button and have driven hard for most of that. Well I drive hard most of the time.

Also the cars are not all mine or driven by me. I only drive the 316 and 2000 318. The others are driven by my family.
