Fuel Consumption on 320d 2011

Morning All.

Now two months after a new baby in the garage and currently with 4000Km on the clock.

What fuel consumption should i be getting on her? JHB - Durbs trip gave me about 18km/L at 130Km/H and now in town she is giving me 12km/L. I do realise se is still new and some talk that only after the first service she will only start to show her real fuel consumption. Is there any truth in this. I dont drive hard at all and my mates said that it is half the problem and that i am not "opening up the motor".

She is still new and dont want to break something, but mates say drop it like its hot as motorplan will cover everything and that BMW can handle more than what i can dream to do to her.

Another thing:
When i got her the first thing i did was to put a layer of cleaner Meg wax liquid on her. How often should i re apply?
How often should i re apply the smart rim wax?
How long before my first leather treatment and what product?

Hey Havoc,

Welcome to the forum.

Those figures you qoute there seems in range. My Dynamic (wich is a manual) gives me between 15-23 km/lt on the open road, thats at speeds betwwen 120 - 160km/h and the odd 200 + all depending on driving style. In town, 12-15km/lt seems to be the norm, also depending on how hard you drive. The worst ever I got was 10.8km/lt.

Mine had her first service @ 11500km, she is currently on 18000km and I could feel a noticeable change in performance from around 15000km or so.

With regards to waxing/polishing... Mine gets a hand polish with Mcquires once every two weeks.

I have never seen my gauge go above 9.3l/100km or something.

I drive about 20kms return a day to work and back and thats in peak sandton traffic which can really get out of hand :yuck: Currently my gauge is sitting on 8.5l/100km.

Again it depends on driving style, mine has an autobox, so consumption is slightly higher than on a manual diesel, but still, the figures you quote sound heavy, unless you tear it from robot to robot every day all the time, in which case its spot on.

you need to allow the engine to wear in, and with 4000km on the clock, I cant advise abusing it "coz BMW can handle it". Yes, motorplan can replace your whole engine if you pop a piston, but do you want to do that to a new car?


And even if they repalce the engine, having the whole engine bay opened up and all the piping, intakes, seals, gaskets opened, it will never be the same.

This is not to say diesels are not meant to be driven hard. My opinion (2c worth) is to just wear in the motor, turbo gaskets, seals and all that other stuff gradually and slowly to about 10 000kms or so, and then the car will settle in and you can tear the shit out of it.

But then again I dont have 40 years of owning a BMW like the other guys on here, so lets see what they say.

As for the leather cleaner. I use the BMW OEM one. Other guys complain its kak, and say use lexol/griots/chemical guys/poorboys/anything else.

I swear by the BMW one, its pricey at a little over R200 for a bottle that includes the mix, 2 sponges and leather wipes. It cleans as it conditions, doesnt shine the leather, or make it slippery. The leather absorbs it fast , it smells great and it has UVA/UVB blockers that prevent the leather from drying out and cracking/splitting. :thumbs:

hi havoc...

i've had my 120d for about a week and a half now.

its got 102k kms on the clock.

i get similar figures to yours, about 5.5l/100km open road, and i'm currently on about 8l/100kms in heavy sandton traffic.

cant give any information about running it in, or a change in behaviour after early services cos i bought mine with the kilometers already racked up .

enjoy the car, i think its a great compromise between power and consumption!!!

I dont know exactly what happens, but she started to pull even harder than before. Specially if you have her in 4th gear and give it horns...

Ja 8.5l/100km in heavy traffic, and now after the 1st service on the open road it drops down to 4.7l/100km with cruise control on.

Very true. I'm just irritated by the bad sound of the professional audio system. Driving my wife's Fezz for the week and the sound is 100x better than in my BMW. Sad.

She is now on 21000km

I can say that after 10000km, she felts different. Feels like she has a bit more power

Man you do major mileage...

Our 2005 Jeep only has 58K Km and we have had it since new...

My family does really majorly small mileages..

Guess thats why the 1992 E36 only had 118K km when we sold it a few months ago

On the radio, click the MENU button. Go to CONFIG and you'll be able to switch between km/l and l/100km.

abd another Thing someone should start a thread with all the E90 OBC computer checks and settings like unlocking of doors sequence and 3 flash indicator settings, and service dates etc. Maybe the e90 owners can do this? I only know how to get into the settings

Just to add my 2c in here...

I've got an e46 330d Manual and my normal every day driving is about 7.3l/100km (13.7km/l).
When I first got it, I was driving it much harder, and was getting about 9.5l/100km (10.5km/l).

I did a trip from Cape Town to Durban, and back, with 3 passengers, and full luggage @ 130km/h and got 5.8l/100km (17.2km/100km).

The E90 diesels are obviously much lower in consumption.

I think mine gives 7.5l/100km. But mine has 5,000km on now. Had it from April this year. Had a nice run to Hermanus this weekend but forgot to check the consumption. Will tomorrow when i get home again.
