Fuel consumption issue

I have a feeling my car is using way too much petrol. I know you guys mostly drive cars with bigger engines, but even compared to that my f20 118i is heavy.

I'm getting 11.2l/100km in stop/go traffic driving to and from work. I pretty much never get to open it up and get to the higher gears. But I don't drive like a maniac at all. Even with a light foot the best I can get is 9.8l/100km and that's in eco-pro mode driving like a damn old lady.

From my research it seems I should be averaging below 9l/100km, even in stop/go traffic.

What would cause this? Are BMW going to charge me to take it in for a checkup?

Yeah seems a bit heavy. I had a 118i as a loaner and the 3 weeks I had it the average was 7.2 though that was traveling between Sunninghill and isando so fair amount of freeway travelling. My F20 125i after 50000km has average of 9.1 and also when I did the 2000km run in after a engine replacement the average was 8.1

Wow okay. Drove home yesterday and to work today in eco-pro mode just to see what I could get. Best was 10.2l/100km. Booked in at BMW next week.

that is a lil heavy..........

is the car brand new? usually the first 1000kms consumption is a lil higher but thereafter should taper down nicely.

my m135i gets 11ll/100km

Hi, i had the same issue with same car.. even accounting for their so called 'claimed' fuel economy figures..

Went in for a service as i complained about the fuel economy and despite still being a long way from an oil change or other service they did reset the adaptive driving ECU (or whatever), basically i'm sure was Ctrl, Alt, Del ;)

Anyway, up side is now much better average of around 7l/100k's, did 6.6l/100k's from Bloem to CT other week. Idle speed was also reset as was bit high/rough.

good luck!

Thanks bud. She's booked in tomorrow. Let's see what they say.

How much open road does the car see? It's always good to open the car up, they can't just drive in traffic, that will result in dismal consumption figures as I learnt with my old F30 320d. Let's see what BMW says, good luck!

Very, very little. I mean, where can a person even open their car up if they live in Joburg and avoid the highway?

What did BMW have to say?

I always open the car up, I find an open road somewhere, take a long cruize at night works wonders for the car and ones own soul

So BMW said they reset the computer and that I should monitor consumption. Since getting it back consumption hasn't changed much. Still sitting at over 11. :smashScreen: :skit: I'll give it another week and if it hasn't improved I guess I'll be back at BMW.

At least the service there is amazing.

I cant speak for the small cars but my E90 330i does between 11.2L and 13.4L with 20% open road and 80% stop/go traffic.

The 11.2L is for the times I get onto the highway and then leave everybody behind, uphill ofcourse , don't track my car, she's to heavy  but then I don't complain as I did expect the fuel consumption.

My E36, 316i was also giving me the same fuel consumption of around 10 - 11L/100km same road.

Long story short, on my daily drive I do 12L/100km average and on the open road I get as low as 6.7L/100km. The thing that makes all of us different, even with the same cars, is the road and time we drive.

Take her on the open road, reset your computer and do about 50km and then see what she says. That will boost your confidence, I am sure of it.

Did bmw really keep the car for a day and ONLY reset the computer via bc stalk, like WTF :dropjaw:

Thanks, Lizzard. I'll do exactly that.

Oh apparently they took off and refitted all the door inners and boot because I mentioned a rattle. That's why it was there all day.
