With the exception of a few four-wheel drive vehicles, BMWs have always been driven through the rear wheels. And those enthusiasts amongst us who appreciate the handling balance and unbothered steering this brings assumed that this would always be the case.

Yet research conducted a few years ago actually came up with some surprising results. It showed that 80 percent of BMW 1 Series buyers thought their car was front-wheel drive.

It would appear then, that BMW buyers in that category care more about the badge status than the actual driving dynamics and since front-wheel drive vehicles are cheaper to build and tend to be more space-efficient, it's only natural that BMW would consider building one.

Enter the 1 Series GT which, according to Autocar, is set to appear as a concept car at the Paris Motor show in late September this year.

It will preview a production model that's set for release towards the end of 2014 and which will reportedly be based on an enlarged version of the next Mini's platform.

As its GT badge suggests, the 1 GT will have an MPV-like design in which the car has a more cab-forward configuration and a taller body. Good for practicality, not so good for driving indulgence.

In another step away from tradition, it's rumoured that entry-level versions of the new Beemer will be powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.

Going head-to-head with the new Mercedes B-Class, it'll be the 'mom's taxi' of BMWs and according to various sources, it won't be the last front-wheel drive vehicle to come from BMW.

Let's hope that BMW's designers can at least get the design right on this one so that it doesn't end up looking like that ungainly hulk that is the 5 Series GT.

How do you feel about a front-wheel drive BMW?

Would you buy one?

If the brand goes FWD... i'm changing brands.

Don't wanna stir, but this doesn't make sense to me Jakkals...Why not just buy one of the RWD models?

Having certain models in FWD won't make the M3 less of an M3 etc? It just makes BMW more money so they can continue making the other models as good as always

If you're moving, you're gonna move to what? Not many other marques have RWD models hey...

Wow you lot are a bunch of bloody drama llamas.

BMW has produced MINI since 2001, currently one of the best FWD produced, not to mention top selling FWD cars currently on the market.

If BMW were to take the MINI Concept, make it more mature and less about wheel-spin and crazyness (which is pretty much MINI) you will probably find a superb BMW dying to be loved.

What BMW has got right with the MINI brand in the last 10 years is more than Ford, VW or Audi have done in the last 40.

I welcome a front wheel drive BMW to the range, it will be superb just like every RWD BMW out there because it is BMW.

Oh, and for all those crying "thats what MINI is for" I suggest you go have a chat to DP at your closest MINI/BMW dealer cos I can assure you right now that MINI is outselling BMW in a nasty way, I dare you guys to do it.

I know BMW dealers that are only open still because of the silly little MINI showroom next to it.

Any FWD BMW that leaves BMW will be so unlike a MINI in any case, BMW has specific ethos to which their business runs. Joy, Efficient Dynamics and Power. This is the BMW brand identity and it is nothing like MINI, as I see it you are ignorantly shunting something which I think will be a superb edition to the BMW Family.

Apply those basic ethos to the 1 series, a phenomenal car as it is, give it a drive-train that anyone can take to the limits, add some clever electronic diffs like the LSD in the John Cooper Works MINI, add some style and some vigour and the 118i motor and you have a superb all-rounder just like a GTI.

Lets face it, times are changing and it isnt like BMW has not surprised us yet considering the current lineup.

no mike completely disagree Rwd is what gives bmw its character...

without it you may as well buy an audi they have better interiors and alot of other things going for them...

next you will argue Subaru should adopt Fwd also :nonono:

Rwd is in the DNA of BMW and should never be removed because the car will never feel the same...

there are plenty Fwd cars out there to choose from why make more...

Yes I agree Moranor but sentiment doesnt make money. :nonono:

Mini originally was intended to be small, affordable and fun, the current MINI Countryman is anything but small or affordable but it captures the MINI essence, the feel of fun, the feel of the road, the handling, the connected feeling you get, the confidence and even the styling of what was a car for the plebs.

The BMW X5 was a concept BMW was berated for, have you seen the amount of E70 X5's on the road? Every second road in Cape Town features a silver, white or black sportspack X5 with shiney wheels. Does it mean its not a BMW? That it doesnt share the same ethos of what BMW stands for? Its exactly what BMW is.

Would we have the amazing twin clutch 4 wheel drive All4 system in the MINI Countryman if it weren't for the X5? Would we have the current lineup of amazing turbo motors if BMW never slapped two of them onto a 3 series and called it a 335i?

It is impossible to claim that RWD is the DNA of BMW. Bikes are the DNA of BMW if you want to be really pedantic but at the end of the day 8 out of 10 people on the road didnt buy a BMW because it is a RWD car. They bought it because it offers value, style, power, fun, joy, efficiency, premium motoring and much more.

I will go on a whim and say that 5 out of 10 BMW owners do not even know their cars are RWD. Whilst the difference comes in that this is an enthusiasts forum for BMW aficionados and to the true enthusiast this may seem like the end of the world, but it isnt.

Its another market, another client and another car added to an already obese lineup of cars that are so far from the original models that you cannot compare them.

I have said this time and time again, BMW is a company and companies need to make money. Just like the X5 filled a gap in their market, just like the 1 series filled a gap a FWD BMW will fill yet another gap for those who want to experience a BMW and couldnt care less about how it puts its power down.

Before you think I am praising the graces of FWD I am not, but lets be honest. Its not going to change the face of BMW.

If there is a market they will penetrate it, its all business at the end of the day.

Statement applies if they do that to all models and not only the 1 series :=):
