Anybody know where would be the best place to pick up front bushes in PE ??

I called autozone down here and they quoted me R325 each... but no stock and it will take 7 to 10 days for stock. I need the car for a long road trip on 3 May... so thats cutting it close !

Advice please guys !

Also, how do you guys check your control arms... or should i say, how do you decide when control arms need replacing ?

Cheers

hey stiffler, December last year I had my front bushes of my ex Beemer (318i) replaced by F1 Fitment Centre in Govan Mbeki - North End (a few shops away from Autosport/Henen's Meat market) Give them a shout. Or are you planning to do a DIY?

if the control arm bushes are gone it will give your car a very shit ride, your steering will have more play than usual, it will shudder at high speed and feel like your not completely in control, when you break you will feel a shudder in the steering too.

another way to check if they really are farked is get somone else to drive your car while your standing outside of it and watch the front wheels. jog with the car and then the person driving must hit breaks....if the front wheel moves from side to side then the problem is very serious and you need to change them asap before you go on the highway and kill yourself, and you need to check both wheels, just because the one wheel is fine doesnt mean the other side is too.

This is my diagnoses on the problem as I had this problem on my old 328i individual, I noticed they were gone from when I pressed the breaks and the steering did a wierd shudder, then my dad checked the front wheel and freaked out haha.

Agreed with osiris, mine used to have a heavy shudder on the steering wheel whenever I braked or turn left over 80km/h. So I replaced the lot in front

Hey Guys,

Planning a DIY... would prefer a DIY. What did F1 charge you Laigo ?

How does R850 for a pair sound ? just spoke to Gelder Motors.. the reckon R850 for both. Just a bit concerned, have read some warnings on this site about Gelder... opinions ?

Osiris... i dont think myne are that far gone. Have been on the highway and given it some stick and no vibration.. BUT the rail that the electric gate runs on at my house is a small little piece of metal.. when i drive over it i can feel and hear that things are no longer so tight down there anymore.
Plus.. if i sit infront of the wheel and grab hold of it on the sides, left and right ( 3 and 9 o clock ) and really yank on the wheel i can detect some play. The wheel moves a bit, i can just visualise it moving in the bush... or ex-bush lol.

This whole scenario came about cause i could hear a very very fanit knocking sound when decelarating, clutch in or out. Sounds like its coming from front left kinda side. Slows down as the car slows down... normally coasting to a robot or stop street. Was concerned about bushes and thats when i grabbed hold of wheel outa frustration in the parking lot and to my shock could detect play in the wheel even with it not jacked up lol... all those years of gym paying off :):) :mmm:

Guess i better check drive shaft guibo while im inder the car ey !?

What you chaps reckon ?

You can actually see if the control arm bushes are gone visually, as far as I remember we jacked the car up and took a wheel off to have a look, but I am pretty sure you can see them if you turn your steering all the way to the left or right.

a bar should fit snug inside the little bush, on non M cars that bush will be Plastic I think and on M cars it will be metal.

In the case of my 328i the control arm bush got broken so badly that it fell out and I just had a metal bar dangeling around in the steel hole, so when I pressed breaks you could hear knocking sound and more importantly it played with the steering when I break or go fast or corner.

I jacked my car up and put a tyre lever between body and control arm and could move control arm - rubber bush ( lower control arm bush ) stuffed .
There was a thread about lcab's and Polyparts in Cape Town ( 021 982 6314 )were mentioned . Good prices ( R125 each ?+R100 housing deposit ) and you can order and send your old housings to them and get a deposit back .Overnight delivery ? If I am correct they have standard and offset ( M3 ) and rubber and polyurethane .Poly for sharp handling , rubber for smooth ride !!
If your balljoints are worn it may be better to replace whole control arm for about R900 , I replaced only the balljoints and the money saved was used up in energy and bad language .:bawling:
Good luck

Well... i just sorted the bushes out with 2 quick calls to George at Polyparts in CT ( 021 982 6314 )

I cant believe a almost paid R850 for some after marker rubber bushes that i would have had to wait 2 weeks for

George has sorted me out with a pair of Poly bushes.
The thread thatw as started a while back stated R125 each plus R100 deposit or old part... but that is for the e36.
The e46 costs R175 plus R100 deposit or old part

I am very chuffed, George is very helpful... and a bit psychic :mmm: or maybe he has caller ID LOL :slap:

Sooo... EFT R599 to him now, bigfoot collect it today and i have the bushes tomorrow ( R114 transport costs ) I snd the old parts back and get my deposit back.
End of the day... new and shiny poly bushes with transport to me in PE for R464 !!

R114 to transport old bushes back to get my R200 deposit back... R86 diff... may just keep the old ones lol STILL CHEAP ! :)

@ Nawti... quality is unknown, but i did get the contact info from a thread off BMWfanatics. I will have to try them out and le you guys know. Not much a visual inspection will tell besides the mould skills of Polyparts. What i based my decision on is the complete confidence of George in his product, his knowldge of exactly what i need and from what i can gather he sells alot of these bushes to other BMW guys.
I hope that it all works out.. if thats the case we have found a very well priced solution to a very common e46 problem :):)

@ Raybimmer :mmm: you should have PM'd that message to me :) now the evil plan is known to all lol
But i do intend to bring another set up. So if anyone needs a set, let me know... i believe Raybimmer has set the price already :pimp:

Will definately give feedback on results.. i am expecting sharper steering response and better "feel"

I do also expect to have to compromise on soft ride ??? What you say ?

Cheers
