For the Diesel drivers - don't throw petrol in

A lady that works here went to the local filling station and threw in petrol but she drives a diesel. Now her 320D 2007 model costing R38 000 to get repaired. She drove a whole 1km before the car started jerking and smoking and eventually came to a stand still.
So this is just a heads up on what you will end up paying for a simple mistake.

Now the fault was not hers, it was the attendants and luckily for her, the filling station is paying.

I don't know hey, why is it the filling stations fault?
I know they supposed to see what they are filling but in all honesty you can't truly blame them, you drive a diesel which looks and sounds to the lame man very similiar to their petrol siblings, it's your responsibility to stop at a diesel pump and make sure it's diesel being pumped.
You can't rely solely on the petrol attendant ..
The filling site should take responsibility I agree but the drivers are to be blamed for wrong fuel, there's 4 grades of fuel per Pump and mistakes become easy!

Well yea but is also the attendant responsibility of making sure/asking which petrol/diesel to use... Both is at fault, but what can you do... dumb and dumber I guess:nonono:

honestly iv never had an attendent just start filling witout waitin for me to say something..even wit petrol theres 93 and 95 (in JHB)..and how hard is it to jus pop your window open and tel them..as it is the fuel cap lid can't open while the doors are locked..???...so these things confuse me..unless the attendent put petrol in when she told him diesel, than it's def the attendents fault...:fencelook:

If the driver asks for diesel but the petrol attendant fills up with petrol, either him or his employer must pay, IMO.

As much as its the responsibility of the petrol attended to take note and not make msitakes like this, I am a firm believer that you as owner/driver share the same amount of responsibility.

Keep in mind some of those guys works 12 hour shifts and can still be human and make a mistake.

Happned to my cousin with his 3month old diesel Cruz. The owner of the garage told him, he is insured for such amtters and that covered his repair cost of R35k.

The lady probably just said fill up without specifying what to fill up with, and as said before it looks and sounds like a petrol, that is if he was even close when the car stopped @ the pump, would say ignorance on both sides is to blame.

I Always make sure they know exactly if it is 50ppm or Unleaded 95 depending on what I am driving.

I'm on the fence with this one since it depends on a few things. Did she specify which fuel she required and make sure that the correct filler hose was being used? Most people calmly say, "fill it up..." - need to specify. Modern diesels are very quiet and don't necessarily shout diesel at a glance, but most (if not all) should have a distinct notice or marking at the fuel cap as per what Nic posted.

Now this happened to my late father many years ago on two separate occasions - luckily the first instance the garage paid for the repair, the second instance he was lucky that there was no damage at all.

So, when filling up, specify exactly what you want, and double check to make sure that they are doing as asked!! Mistakes like this shouldn't happen, but best to do ones part to prevent it - ultimately if something goes wrong it's going to be more of a hassle for you anyway!!

No, the smaller one belongs to the petrol drivers...oh, you talking about the fuel nozzle :mmm:

Only the unleaded fuel pumps have smaller nozzles, diesel have normal size.

Eish !

The first question I ask the attendant is if they have 50pp Diesel, onlyvif he answers yes do I ask him to fill up. I usually fill up at the same Garage all the time but still ask just to make sure the attendant understands what I want.

I also jump out the car before he starts filling and check what he is about to fill then open and close my bonet myself for him to check windscreen washer fluid.

Tyre pressure I usually check and fill myself at home as Its usually never right when its done by them.

But she asked for Diesel, there is even a diesel label on tank cap.

It was clearly the attendants fault. She admitted to it and got fired which is sad.
