Flooded Garage

Guys my dad just phoned me from his office.

He left the 525i there the weekend & says there is a water mark half way up the doors like as if the whole 18" wheels were under water.

What could be damaged? I told him not to start the car as I am sure the exhaust could have filled up with water.


What are the options?

Safest option? Don't touch it. Put her on a flatbed, send her to BMW and send the bill to the insurance.

Thats what I suggested to him.. They going to struggle getting it out the garage onto the flat bed..

See the thing with insurance (mostly) is, that they can ask you what did you try and do to minimize the damage.

It's like when you have an accident and they can prove that you had the chance to avoid it, and didn't - then they can get real hardegat.

I get that, but now, afterwards, if you start the car and something does go wrong, they will turn around and say that you shouldn't have started the car, and called for help 1st thing.

Insurance!!! Eish.

Not to say this WILL be the case, but rather safe than sorry.

Did any water actually penatrate the cabin ?

The issue is, if there was water entering into the exhaust, it has no where to go to, the first heat up/start up the water will just burn away, if there are any.

What you need to watch out for here is electrical connectors/control modules soaked in water, I doubt that there is any unless water actually penetrated the cabin.

There is a fair amount of electronics in the boot, and scattered all over the car (in the footwells, under the handbrake/gearlever and so forth, but if that did not get any water in, you should be fine.

LZ Will go up there later & check it out..

I have heard stories of cars being under water & exhausts fulling with water & when the car gets started it sucks in water into the engine.. so was scared about that.. But maybe its a different story if the car was running when it entered the water & stalls & has to be restarted ie when off roading & wading through a river

the only time it will suck is through the intake - so no fear there. but its the electronics that you need to worry about. Good luck:thumb:

We stay near melrose arch.. this his office parking also by melrose arch.

There was an old Jag also parked in the underground but more towards the main entrance, the Jag got moved by the water to the next parking spot!!!

Not that I have experience with this kind of thing but I think the car should be fine, as the water level doesn't look like it would have reached much of the interior stuff which would be my main worry, most of the at side stuff is pretty water tight, especially on a newer car where the rubbers and stuff are still nice and uhmm well rubbery

One It also doesn't look like the water could have gotten to the battery (into the boot), but that would of course depend on where the venting holes for the boot are.

This must suck, but I hope there are no big problems.

Well, Jags are known to handle like boats compared to BMs

On the 5er, it does not look that bad. I'm sure the car will be fine - keep us posted.

Well, I remember when my 7 was in the basement and the basement set on fire.

I over-reacted completly as well, you willbe amazed how well those cars are sealed... naw I recon you dont have much to worry about there, apart from a seriously good wash.....

I just saw this car at the dealership... was shocked to see, the water line was almost 1/2 way up.... very sad!!! whole exhaust must have been submerged...

I Had a client that drove in to WATER with a brand new Merc E350 coupe the car switched off ,
and the Mercedes helped us out we managed to dry all the water with no damge at all ,and it had collected allt of water .
So from the pics i say nothing serious, take it in to BmW and let them run a check for you.

The exhaust is full of water, when they came to tow it they shook it & heard slosh slosh slosh.

The 5 is sealed so well. Not a drop of water inside the car..

sealed so well that from this pic we can see that the whole car actually must have floated cause look at the water/dirt line on the wheel & the body

And look at the line on the wall & the car..
