Hi Guys,

Driving back to the office today, every time a came to a stop, the oil light flashed red, the minute the revs a touch to the slightest or I pulled away, it went off.....

My q is, is it low oil pressure, oil pump or is it just that the revs are falling too low.

Thanks a mil

Hey Mr Fastguy!

That sounds like low oil pressure for sure! It could be faulty oil pump or pressure regulating valve in the system. Do you use the correct oil type & when last was it changed/serviced?

Either one, you should have it checked out ASAP as serious engine can result from this! Have the oil pressure mesured/check with a manual pressure gauge to be 100% sure!

Some people will tell you 'it's only the sensor that's faulty'. My neighbour lost his Audi's engine because of that kind of diagnostics! :thumbdo:

Good luck & let us know what was the cause! :=):

Would help to know what car it is? On my X5 diesel i found the oil light flickering on and off when idling on a very hot day in summer in Cape Town traffic. But this was right after i had changed the oil and filter. Used the 5w30 synthetic as prescribed for my car but with 230k km's on the clock i should have used at least a 10w30 or 10w40, which i will be using at the next service. Btw, afterwards only flickered once again on a hot day in 10k km's!

Hi Flex,

Checked the oil level - ok. It just had a oil service about 2500km ago.
Spoke to the mech as well, he suggested i bring it back to check the oil filter?

Thanks a mil guys

Not sure why he wants to check the oil filter if it has been changed 2500k's ago?? Ask what his reason is?

Make sure you have the right oil for your engine + mileage, usually slighty thicker oil type for diesel engines than petrol.

When that light comes on, it means there is insufficient oil pressure to lube the moving parts, which can lead to main bearing damage etc, meaning engine overhauling eventually.

Have it checked out to be 100% if it was me. :=):
