First time buyer

Good day gents.

Well somehow a bug has bit me and I decided to get myself a bike. I am a very picky person so I can't just buy something. So now I come to the guys with allot of years of riding experience.

I'm looking for something that can do long distances. I prefer the cruisers. The Suzuki Boulevard/Intruder look really catches my eye. I would not mind the BMW cruisers but they are a bit too expensive. I also don't have an amazing budget to start with... I am looking at doing a trip to cape town in February. So hopefully I can find something by then.

What would you guys recommend for a first time buyer?

First time bike?
Friend advised me to start with smaller capacities (say 600 / 800) and work your way up to stay alive, unless you are an experienced rider
I am vertically challanged, so I never bought one.

Happy bike hunting.

Whats your budget??

Thanx for the advice guys

My budget is only 30-40k

That is why I want to buy a cruiser. Something not incredibly fast and something that's comfortable.

I had the oppertunity to buy my friends R1 a while back. And I knew climbing onto a 300kmh bike the first time is not a good idea.

I'm just looking for something you can hop onto and take a drive to nowhere. :fencelook:

Something like this. Cheap and apparently relatively reliable and economical. Suzuki VZ800

Like HERR said, a GS, any GS. The 650/800 is a good starting point, but probably above your budget.

The bikes I would advise that I know have great reps and are extremely comfortable and reliable are

BMW 1250 never driven this bike but know many guys who own these and swear by it, they do trips all the time and apparently it's even more comfy than the KTM. Low center of gravity well balanced bike, very easy to ride even for the 1200cc

Kawasaki ZX1400 sound intimidating but a very comfortable and easy ride, this one of course is very fast, I had the pleasure of taking one out for a ride when I was in Ellisras and it is so easy to drive (don't compare this with superbikes like the R1) very comfortable and not intimidating at all. you could do a trip to Cape Town on this Bike easily.

There is the SRAD Suzuki, this bikes prices are not bad, it's not a super or a tourer but also not a kicker like the R1. you could ride this bike comfortably.

As for going smaller yes I agree, but not too small hey, daai klein bikies kan even meer dangerous wies as doe groters some times.

 take your time, get you licence first if you can, then go for some rider training - and by then you will hve a better idea what bike you would like, its an expense lost - because of all theg gear you will need also is not cheap and you wont recover the cost if you decide against riding after the first year.
Good luck  But be warned - if the bug bites you will spend more. :fencelook:

Hey Zack,

Try do some research on the Yamaha Vmax, its within your budget, its a comfortable cruiser and more than enough grunt for the buck...

Although, if it is your first bike...think twice before taking on a long trip....Have you ever had any other experience on bikes, on or offroad...and if so, what sizes have you handled.

So after some shopping I decided to go for something cheap. I figured that the chances are that it's going to end up on it's side or something... So I was looking at something like this...

Hyosung GT650R

Cheap, economical, not too fast but with still reasonable grunt.

Opinions?

Yes I know Hyosung is not one of the best brands... But figured I don't have to go for a R100 000 bike the first time.

I used to own one of these... i am telling you it is one of the greatest looking bikes ever! :praise: and is very comfortable when riding long distances. You said you like KTM so seriously look at one of these, not bad price either...

KTM RC8
