Interesting question. I suppose all Dealerships will have some insurance to cover this :fencelook:

PM Moranor@Axis about having your vanos seals replaced. He stocks the aftermarket Beisen seals and anti rattle kit which will get your vanos operating properly again. I am surprised that BMW would sell the vanos for as little at R6k.

I heard that Beisan seals are superior to OEM ones

Yep they are imo. I bought the seals from Moranor and had mine done by a local mech in Durban. I know that Moranor has been in discussions with some workshops in KZN about becoming his preferred / recommended fitment centers. Hopefully he can assist you with this and not just the supply / sale of the seals.

BMW will offer to replace the entire VANOS unit for you... The part alone I believe is well over R6k... Was in parts the other day when someone was ordering a new VANOS unit...

Over R6k...

Would it be cheaper to approach a reputable mechanic that can get the part for less? How long does a VANOS unit typically last?

You do not need to replace the VANOS, I am having the one on my car rebuilt for around R2k, depending on what the mechanic charges for removing and reinstalling it.

Also if you buy it from BMW, you're only good for about 32000km, because that is when the OE rubbers pack up again, the replacement seals and O-rings for the VANOS from Beisan (Moranor) lasts a lot longer.

The Vanos units are seldom the problem, it's the original seals that eventually fail - what I gather can happen though, if it is left too long, the pistons can end up scoring the chambers in the Vanos, but then the seals have to really be severely worn out. Mine with over 180k km were no doubt worn, but the chambers were still perfectly smooth with no traces of scoring. Basically fitting a new Vanos versus replacing the seals is as far as I am concerned, just a waste of good money - the OEM seals will just wear out again anyway...

Interesting question regarding insurance - I would think (borderline assume) that dealerships have some sort of insurance, but I suppose it's worth asking just to be safe. I would also think that if you as owner have comprehensive insurance there must be cover for things like this, again, probably worth making inquiries.

Question: will the tappet cover gasket of an e46 330i fit our 320i motors?

Why do you want to do that? Is it not better to just get the original part? My question is can you fit E36 cooling system bits on the E46? After all the horror stories I do not trust the E46 cooling system anymore.

Google the part numbers of the two gaskets, if the part numbers match it is the same gasket.

My question related to the cooling system is are parts on the E36 and E46 cooling systems interchangeable?

Thanks man. I wouldn't know about those cooling system components I'm afraid. :thumbdo:

OK cool I just found a neat thread on doing this job for an e46 325ci...I feel that the tappet cover gasket would be interchangeable having looked at this DIY guide... The heads of these engines are essentially the same at this point. :fencelook:

Now I'm waiting for someone to chime in... ...I hope I'm right.

Will Google the part numbers in the morning

Hi,

What would be considered to be the weakest part of the E46 cooling system, and can that be changed to a better and longer lasting item?

Some might say the water pump, but BMW did release an updated water pump with a composite impeller which is supposed to be more durable. Many believe that using a water pump with a metal impeller is better, but these can also have bearing failure.

I would say the first thing to replace is the expansion tank.
