Question: What do you run your tyres at on the E46?

:fencelook:

I do 2.2 bar in the front and 2.6 in the back...don't know if this is correct

Best I got travelling to Nelspruit and back, solid 10.00 km/lt, this morning to work:

Car still has very bad torque though ...

Gosh that's what I get when flogging my car around town :fencelook: :thumbdo:

Have you checked out the sensors at all?

Well, I have to say, I had to flog the car to stay above 80, had to gear down to 3rd on most uphills, and I flogged the car when coming to work this morning.

The Vanos seals in this one must be paste ...

About the E46 cooling system, the way I look at it, comparing it to the E30's system, is that if the system ran just a little bit cooler, it would last longer. It simply is running too hot on the E46!

Hey chaps! I just bought some antifreeze and want to know if I absolutely must flush my cooling system before adding antifreeze to it?

Ah shoot. I just bought some at Game. Is there an OEM one I should buy from the stealers? I want to top up but I don't know what quantities of anti-freeze are already in my system. I don't want to corrode anything so I was thinking of making a 50-50 mix of anti-freeze and water and keep topping up with that over winter.

What do you suggest Philip?

*I assume anti-freeze has a corrosive effect....

It is best to use the OEM anit-freeze - there is a special solution that they use to prevent damage to the rubber hoses and to prevent corrosion. The normal off the shelf stuff will work, but most likely cause problems with these hoses etc. Yes, normal 50:50 mix with distilled water (not de-ionised).

If it's just a small amount to top up, you can actually just add some BMW anti-freeze to the existing coolant.

Howzit, thanks for asking, yes, but I have not done anything yet to try and resolve it, still driving the car "as is" until I have all the parts to do the job of fixing it, which should be around next week.

What parts are you changing to solve the problem?
I had a similar problem with my car. vanos seals where changed(caused a lag at lower rpm), Disa valve was changed its a box that fits on your intake manifold it was broken inside (caused a rattling noise aswell as overfuel), All the small breather pipes where changed because of small holes and cuts and even some plastic parts broken(caused eratic idle when cold, a miss and overfuel), Cleaned all the senses and after all that and having the two rear cats removed fuel consumption aswell as power has been the best since I got the car.Just some things to look out for when doing your repairs might help.

Thanks, taking all the cats out, changing the sensors, will check the hoses, did not check the DISA valve yet. VANOS also on the to do list.

Hey E46 320i Owners!

I've got a question regarding tyres:

Julia is sitting on some pretty old rubber. Although there's no signs of cracking on the tyre walls I just don't feel so comfortable knowing that these are getting on.

She's got Bridgestones - Turanza ER30 205/55/R16 91V all round. The spare is pre-2000 and 3 of the tyres were made in Dec 05 with one being made in Dec 01...NOT GOOD!

Any recommendations regarding new tyres? I want the perfect balance between road-holding and mileage. I'm thinking of getting new Turanza ER300s...

Many thanks chaps!:thumbs::thumbs:

Hi Cerberus,

Sorry, I can't comment on the tyres, because my E46 came with 17" style 158 rims from an E90 but I had many close calls with tyres which had "stone" as part of their name, such as Firestones and Nankang (also made by a "stone" company) in wet weather. I now prefer mostly Good Year or the likes of it.

No worries man - I got myself four Michelin Primacy 3's.

They are quite good, though not as hard-wearing as my old Bridgestones.

The car is currently with a mechanic - getting the rear wheel bearings replaced. She's only coming up on 117k km today.

I'm getting charged the better part of R6k for the job...feel like I may have paid too much :thumbdo: but time constraints now prevent me from getting other opinions.

Thoughts GP?

Phew, 117000 km, your car is brand new! That is a lot of money just to get the wheel bearings replaced.

I am speaking under correction but is it not almost the same setup for the E46 as on the E30 for R/W bearings - I had the rear CV joint replaced on my E30, took the guys only 40 minutes, after struggling for 30 min to loosen the drive shaft locknut :roflol:

Eish.

Well I'm hoping that these are the last of my worries for another 50k km...though that is wishful thinking!

Next time I'm anticipating maintenance I'll ask around for more quotes.
