Hey guys, got my E36 318iS last friday, the guy connected the fan to a manual switch,it kept blowin the relay and this was his solution.

What could be the cause to this?He eventually removed the fan and fitted a universal fan.I havent changed anything yet on the car, firstly gathering some info and advice.

Thanks alot

Well, popping a relay means over-voltage

The only way you could have over-voltage is an additional strain, or pulling more amps then what the relay is designed for, and that could be caused by a. tapping something else into the fan power, such as HID's, but I doubt this is the case, as that would just be silly.

However what is far more likely is that the fan has increased resistance, due to bearing/windings/bushes going south, so replacing with a universal may be a good idea.

The manual switch will work, however it could be slightly dangerous as it may overheat the wiring harness/fan motor housing, causing a fire, so replacing the fan is prob the best thing.
