Factory alarm issue

Good morning fanatics. Trust the weekend was a good one?

Might be a long one...

Well Saturday evening I had an issue with my alarm. Stopped of at my destination and my car wouldn't lock using the remote(two button key-no ews?).(1995 E36 325i)

I figured maybe it's the batteries...i carry a spare set in the boot so u swapped them out but no luck....car still wouldn't lock. Then I had the bright idea of getting in the car and using the remote.....I locked myself in....

So now I'm stuck in the car can't open the windows or doors coz if I switch the car on(ignition) the alarm screams. Eventually get out of the car nascar style through the drivers window but still no luck unlocking the car.(walk away)
Eventually when leaving I try again with the remote...no luck....
I unlock using the key get in and try to push start...no luck.(I assumed the immobiliser cuts out the ignition?)

Then I pulled this out of the console in front of the gear lever

the part itself looks something like a relay

After doing this the remote disables the alarm and i'm able to start the car.

I slapped the part number of said part into realoem.com and it comes up as "tell tale alarm system" ( 65.75 8 357 417)

it's the light that flashes to indicate that the alarm is activated....is there any harm in driving without this part? I can lock and unlock the car with no probs now and the alarm still activates. I haven't had a chance to check the wiring diagrams in my bentleys manual yet.

Any advice guys and gals?
