F82 M4 - Buying advice

Hello to everyone

I tried searching the forum before posting but couldn't find a thread with that info. Please direct me if it already exists.

I am looking for a F82 M4 and would like your advice.

My main questions are regarding differences between model years, and whether the ZCP is a must, given that prices are very similar (differences in price seem more correlated to MY) . Also i hear some people complain about the harshness of the ZCP ride. I won't be driving on perfect roads so would like to know if I should get a non comp.

Feel free to throw any valuable advice you might have. I have already shortlisted a few to go look at this week.

Thank you

The harshness is VERY subjective. You will also find that the majority of owners (of any car) are just very happy and don't bother posting about harshness etc. You will have to go and drive a ZCP car as well as a regular car in order to make a call. If you can 'stomach' the ZCP ride then go for it. I still don't think the Comps are anything close to an actual 'sportscar' harshness or feel that you would find in a special 911 or Cayman - certainly not to the degree it should be a make/break decision.

I retrofitted all the competition suspension stuff to my F10 M5 and found it to be worth the effort since the stock car was way too 'comfortable'/soft. At the same time guys were wanting to swap Pirellis and Michelins out for tyres that would give them more compliant ride (why not buy a 7 series, I don't know... but anyway) and still others were fitting KW suspensions at great cost because they really should have bought an M3/4 instead.

Think about what you're gonna do yourself as well: if you are going to lower the car anyway or fit a different exahust anyway or tune it anyway etc then the list of reasons to buy a comp becomes shorter and shorter... I didn't get an F90 comp but also partially because the comp wasn't going to be low enough anyway and I fitted the M Performance HAS system. I had plans for Dinan suspension stuff at some point in the future if the time comes (but the F90 was a much better feeling car than the F10 straight off the bat even in non comp form). With the Corsa tyres it seems to have met my preferences for now.

With the F8x, the cars I've driven don't feel very hard to live with in Comp form... granted I have never had to live with them. This is a very personal thing to decide on because we are at different ages, states of fitness, weights, heights etc. Is it nice to have a comp? Of course it is - for me even just for the seats :ROFLMAO:, However everything else can be retrofitted or improved (for a price) and you can get way more power even from a very very conservative tune.

Our definition of less than perfect roads is also very subjective. If the road is too bad for a comp, chances are it's going to be very nearly as bad in a regular car. You won't suddenly feel like you're in a Rolls Ghost if you choose the non-comp. I have found people complaining about Midrand roads which have the odd pothole I drive on these all the time just fine... then you drive through Fourways and some of the main roads are basically disintegrating... and there are tons of M/comp/Porsche drivers that drive around there every day... you can treat it as a slalom course :ROFLMAO: then you get roads that need an actual SUV to traverse in other provinces (Stares at KZN). You work around having lower or sportier cars from a height perspective as well as the type of tyres you have on them. It isn't that big of a deal in reality.

From a utility/daily use perspective it is also subjective. The point where I'd guess it becomes difficult for me to live with a car is something like a GTS or DTM M4 - or RS Porsches. For other people this threshold is a base M car let alone a Comp. I regularly do grocery and school runs in my 4C which some would find undrivable for daily use (and every second 4C youtube video is about practicality or daily driveability on what is meant to be someones 3rd or 4th car :ROFLMAO: ).

Go have fun driving and experimenting. If there is something that is a must-have for me it would be the EDC/Adaptive suspension.

ZCP is a must on the F82.
I had a base LCI M4, that I fitted MPerformance HAS to afterwards, and the base car tuning is much more erratic and inevitably makes the car more twitchy.

ZCP is much more composed, and the engine tuning flatter and fatter.
For even R100k more, I would buy the ZCP. I ended up wanting to convert my base for a ZCP, hence me buying the HAS etc etc but the car was still erratic as I couldn't load the ZCP engine SW.

What about model year issues. Are there any years I should avoid or should I just aim at the most recent I can afford? Or still if I should ignore MY and focus on lower mileage. All this assuming FSH and a BMW inspection report.

I personally wouldn't get into an F8x chassis without it having 666M wheels and the Competition seats

I had a 2018 M4 Comp. It was one of the best cars I have owned in terms of complete package, but ending up trading her in because I just could not handle the daily commute.

My daily drive is from Bryanston to Germiston daily. Most of it in peak stop and go traffic. Exactly what the car is NOT built for. Driving it at any other time was an absolute pleasure, the hard ride, lack of back support on the seat, whining diff, hearing every pebble picked up by the tyres and DCT Box in traffic was a nightmare for me.

I was made a great offer for her and let her go. Decided to get something more suited for my daily commute and got a JCW, got bored and started missing the power and then went for a M2 comp which I found a lot more comfy that the M4 Comp with the power.

It may not be the most comfortable daily, but nothing regular physio cant fix. GO FOR IT !!

Hello everyone again

What are your thoughts on this car? I am ready to pull the trigger.

Check out their videos on Tiktok, cool bunch of guys. @havaltoti

Umar brought a vehicle to me to have a look at, they keep clean stock.

Previous owner of the M4 seems quite meticulous judging by the steering wheel cover and the backseat protection šŸ†

Look at service history..see what parts got replaced..inspect the car..make sure it wasnt a hooligan owning the car. Also..personally would prefer buying from a BMW dealer only.

Only look at 2018 LCI upwards. Always look at MP as a must.

There is a BLACK 2018 M4 Comp..under 20k mileage. Personal sale advertised on Autotrader. Owner based in PE. Owner is legit. Price states 1.3m but you need to speak to the owner. Car was originally bought from the Archive in Cpt. Elite car dealer.

Ah ok. It expires in April.
Ideally you would want to get a car with Motorplan that only lasts more then just a few weeks. BMW has also become alot stickier with approving claims. You have been patient thus far, stick it out and the right car will find you 😊

But that will mean I will have to look for newer cars still with MP and those will be more expensive. What are BMW terms? Can't I buy a third party MP when the one from BMW expires?

You can but no after market warranty is as comprehensive as bmw's Motorplan. For eg a generic motorite policy covers a turbo up to a max amount of say 10k,that means if my turbo fails and it costs R14K, then I am liable for the difference out of my own pocket. Motorplan covers all costs and labour done by it's dealerships.

Iv also never seen any aftermarket warranty that will cover a wear and tear item such as brake pads / disks / clutch /xenon globes etc.

Lastly, you can still look for 2018 cars (the maximum period a BMW will be on Motorpan is 5yrs and then be extended for additional years for a grand total of 7years) , just look for a car that has atleast 6months of Motorplan left

Never has true word been spoken around aftermarket warranties.
