The Audi weighs 235kg more than the BMW and has 120Nm on the Audi, of course the BMW will win. Not a fair fight
Ok if we go with this logic then if an F80 M3 races anything other than an F80 M3, it will not be a fair fight. What a boring motoring world that would be.
But had the Audi won, then the fight would have been fair?
These cars compete directly with each other in the market. Why not compare them?
I agree the RS4 Avant can be seen as direct competition.
I say it is not fair because of the massive difference in power to weight ratio. You would expect the M3 to win it. However had the Audi won it, it would have made wonder you where is all the extra power is going to waste in the BMW.
Look at this video: drag race between the BMW M6, Merc E63 & a Jag XFR-S. The BMW is heaver and has less power(however there is not a huge difference between the Merc & the BMW), yet it wins in a straight line. Now that is impressive against what you can really call direct competition (Sedan V Sedan).
Skip to around the 12:00min mark.

Why Audi has not turbocharged it, I don't know cause they did it with the older RS6 Avant. And that kicked ass in straight line. Maybe they where not aiming at beating the M3 in a the performance category but wanted to offer something different. Because there is no estate M3 and maybe you don't like Merc so then you go for the Audi.
These guys(who did the video) also had the M3 against E63 and the M3 lost. Again not really a fair fight but it was interesting to see non the less.
All I am saying is, take the result with a pinch of salt because the Audi is heaver and as not got the power to match F80.
But that just opinion and each to his own.
