Firstly I have had BMW since E46 days and Tauranza was the best for me of all the brands I tried. Now my F30 has the Bridgestone Potenza s001 that it came from the factory 225 50 17.

Im on 35 000km and they should still last till 40 000km. The problem I have is that they are not goot in the wet :thumbdo: I was looking at Yokohama but then again they are not BMW approved.

What are your recomendations and opinions

I was always a fan of contis. The bridgestones rfts I had were absolutely horrible!
But you have a newer version it would seem.

Maybe opinions differ. But this is what I know from experience and what I have heard in the past - going according to E90 of course.

My Continental Sport Contact 2 RFT's (225/45R17) were horrible in just about every sense! Road noise, tramlining, hard, less that ideal grip, just made the E90 feel unstable and unpleasant. In fact, I have them temporarily on the E46 and at open road speeds the car feels quite dangerous with its tendency to pull the car from side to side depending on road camber and surface change.

I was extremely sceptical of the Bridgestone Potenza RFT's and when I bought my style 188 narrow/wide wheels they came with these tyres. I just remember family of ours who had an E90 320i 2005 model complaining bitterly about them and how the car also suffered from tramlining. So I did not expect much when I fitted them on my car to test. Well, I was completely taken aback at how much better they were compared to the SC2 RFT's! The car felt lighter on its feet and handled a lot better overall, and virtually no tramlining! Grip is good, but I reckon not as good as a good set of non-RFT's. Noise is somewhat better, and ride is also a bit more bearable. Something to remember though is that the initial Potenza RE050 (full tyre model) was much improved with the RE050A, RE050A1 and RE050A2 models (the two last ones being much the same actually). Mine are the RE050A1 on the front and RE050A2 on the rear.

Quite a long time ago I spoke to a helpful chap at a tyre place and he explained to me why the Bridgestone Turanza RFT is known to be noisy (mostly from what I read on the E90Post forum at the time), that being the tread pattern. Other than that, cannot comment on these tyres.

Pirelli P-Zero RFT's are fantastic, would have loved to get them for my car, but at the time they were hellish expensive and there was a local shortage of them. I reckon they are still better than the Potenza RE050A's that I have.

To be honest, I am surprised that the Potenza S001 RFT is not so great from your experience, maybe just better suited to dry conditions. Truth be told, I am lately super cautious in the wet, so don't really put my tyres' grip to the test. But it's when you need to avoid an accident that good grip counts, so don't blame you for wanting to find a better tyre.

I had Bridgestone reo50 on a Mazda rx8 and they were great up to a point. I was told by a kwik fit guy that when the tread gets 1-2mm from being legally frot the rubber has harder compound and then reduced grip to extend life a bit. Not sure if true but would make sense based on what I experienced. Can't comment on s001 though. My F20 has conti sc5 on and after 30000km the rears still have 4mm tread left and no grip or tramlining issues. Have already decided to stick with them going forward.

Thanks Philip and peanut125i. Yes the Potenza S001 are great in dry conditions and very little road noise. Well there is about 4mm left so this is also a factor I have to considder. And i also have to take in account motorplan. Well I have placed an order for 2 New Potenza's (+/- R2600/tyre) due to these factors and also taking into account your comments.

Thanks guys

From the huge amounts of research I've done.. it appears the BEST runflats are the Michelin PS2's, followed by Conti SSR 3. Eagle F1 Asymettrical 2 Runflats are also good, not sure if we get em in SA.

Of course we do I have them currently in 19 inch form and love them better than the contis SSR5

My rear RE050A are very close to the min wear markers, but grip still seems to reasonably good - then again, with the mostly damp weather I am not taking any chances. I could believe that the compound is harder and possibly less grip. With the tread worn to this point, there is a large amount of rubber footprint (almost comparable to a semi-slick), so hence my caution in the wet.

Guys, are we trying to fix a problem that doesn't really exist.
The OEM recommendation is Bridgestone so just go with that.

As for the tyre not performing to your expectations in the wet!!- Are you at 50% tyre ware or less at the mo , and if so:
The lower the tread , the lower the water dispersion.... Afterall, thats the only purpose the tread serves.

Once again, that's just my opinion
