Hi guys

This morning i started the car and felt a harder start than usual, got the battery warning light on, car has 94000km and production date is January 2014, it seems the battery was never changed,my question is, do i get it charged and wwait for it to die as it was perfect until this morning, or should i rather replace it, what do dealers charge for a new battery?

6 years is a good innings, especially for a stop start battery.

You can try charge it up and see how much longer you can stretch it. Not sure how long your trips are? Maybe they are short and not enough to sufficiently charge the battery.

Otherwise if you’re looking for a replacement, pop me your details and I’ll get pricing for you

Mine lasted 7.5 years. You can charge it up to try and get some more life out of it, but I would recommend getting a new one.

The car just starts a lot smoother with the fresh battery.

Got myself a Duracell AGM battery that works like a charm. Think it cost me R2250 in Feb. Bought at Capital Batteries in Centurion. Please make sure to get the your vehicle coded for the new battery! The battery fitment guys will try and persuade you that it is not necessary and they will fit the battery in a "special" way, ie keeping the car runnig with another battery, while doing the swop.

I just took out the old battery and replaced with the new one while car was off. And got it coded as soon as possible after.

Greasemonkey Motorgarage can help with the coding in Centurion.

Thanks bud, really wish it gets me through Until January at least that would be a solid 7 years,  but if i have to get it changed i have no choice , im gona have it charged today and see how long it lasts.
Please get me Pricing on a new one in the meantime , do you register the battery as well?

Thanks bud Im gona do just that, sent it for charging today, I have also requested a quote from Deago at ABM to get a taste of what dealers charge, reading up I see that if it is not registered correctly it will decrease the lifespan as the alternator still reads the charge needed of the old battery , so wana get it done properly.

I'll get quotes and pop you a message.

Yes I can also assist with battery registration.

As a side note: occasionally (about once a month), the M3 gives me a low battery warning, or if I leave the ignition on for about a minute, then the warning pops up. I then give it a charge overnight and then it's fine again for the next month or so. The battery has no issues starting the car. This battery is now 4yrs, 1month old. It's been doing this since I got the car, but not sure how long it will last before it gives up officially.

On the topic guys, each time you try to start a car with the battery at a lower than normal voltage, is there any damage being done to the starter?

I have had a battery issue after lockdown but charged using the BMW / CTEK charger on recondition mode.....did help for a while but slowly deteriorating so if there is damage being done to the starter would rather just replace the battery.

Nope, no damage to the starter, the only damage is to the battery. Ideally, when your battery is low, you shouldn't attempt to start the car before charging it first. But that is not always the case because there is no low battery warning/indication that comes before starting
