E34 FTW

technically, mechanically and structurally the 340i is far superior, but you're comparing it to a car made in the early 90's.

the 340i wouldnt be what it is, without the M1 M3, M5, M6 (325is :p) of that era.

+1 (even though I'm a sucker for modern tech)

Very weird comparison.

A small saloon with a B58 3 litre twin scroll turbo against a large saloon from the 90's made for cruising with a grunt of low burble when needed.

The E34 M5 is for the purist who likes the grunt and pure adrenaline of driving an M car. The F30 340i for the enthusiast who wants the newest and fastest there is available for the right price.

We are busy comparing 2 different groups to each other :tiptoe:

They are about the same size: E34 is 100mm longer and 100mm narrower than F30.

I would not daily the e34 M5 (again). Been there, done that.

It is a pain.

I will however still have the e34 M5 over the F30.

Ironically, when the E34 came out, it got flack for being too refined and too heavy and insulated compared to the E28. Time shifts perspective, I guess. Ten years from now we'll be fawning over 340i's, probably.

And as someone who daily-drive's a pansy two-pedal 540 (perhaps a closer match in terms of range position than the M5) I can say right now that the new car would be a better drive in almost every way, but it won't feel as special. I guess it depends on what you want your commute to be.

The E34 is the classic to have, to keep in the garage, to be used on special occasions..

The 340i is an ideal daily car for someone who needs a bit of power on their daily trips.. Is it a special car? I can't tell but my daily drive F30 335i makes me smile each day, except in stop go traffic.. But it will by no means be a modern classic in my view, it's just too boring.. My 2c?
