Hi guys

Howcome it reads Twin Power on my engine cover?

How does the turbo in my F30 330d differ from the turbo I had in my E90 330d?

It's called twin power because there are two scrolls in one turbo, as far as I know.

Thanks guys, I am familiar with twin scroll turbos, but I was unaware that they used them on diesels. My F30 does feel more responsive at low rpms than my E90 did, but it's not as strong as a 135i below 1700 rpms. Or am I wrong?

I would say its stronger than a 135i below 1700rpms. Thats my findings after having owned both. The 135i revs higher and doesn't run out of puff as quickly as the 330d.

They would be pretty evenly matched in a drag race with the 135i maybe just taking it depending on driver ability.

I drove the 320d before this and on the day of testing a 335i one of my 1st comments were how much torque the 335i has low down.. Having never owned a 6cyl diesel I would expect the 330d to have loads of torque IF NOT more pull than a stock x35i low down..
Once the x35i is on full boost it will get interesting

You do know the 135i also came out with twin scroll turbo from 2010 iirc?

Yup. I owned the N54 and then the N55

So false advertising then, interesting.

Not false advertising at all, perhaps just misunderstanding or a bit of smoke and mirrors? From the outset of my search for a 330d I did some research into them and they never claimed to have a twin scroll turbo. The claim is that the turbocharger has twin inlet ports which are ducted from selected cylinders to create a smoother feed to the turbo and thus reduce lag.

This was how I understood it.

That is essentially what a Twin Scroll Turbocharger is, a snail with twin exhaust gas inlets (one smaller, one bigger). Depending on firing order of an engine the manifold used pairs cylinders to scavenge as much exhaust gas as possible making it more efficient way of turbocharging.

I bow to your superior knowledge. You are 100% correct. I was under the impression twin scroll was a smaller turbo feeding a larger one but I guess that would be twin turbo too. Guess it's all in the definition.
:sorry:

BMW use the phrase Twin Power if a variant has direct-injection and a turbocharger.

Basically all of them, really.

Bi turbo - one small, one big.
Twin turbo - same size
Twin Scroll - cylinders sharing chambers in the turbo for less turbo lag.
