Hi Guys

As per my previous thread
https://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=86700

I found an F30 330d in the spec, colour, mileage and price range that I was looking for.
it has full service history , no comments, and about a month left of Mplan.
can other owners please advise me what else to check for? also I would like to get the issues I experience sorted out on Mplan before it expires, how do I go about doing this? (non of my previous 4 BMWs had Mplan that I used)

Seems like you found a gem!

Rule of thumb, BMW wont fix anything if its not broken. If i were you, I would place the car under a microscope while still under motorplan to detect any issues / rattles etc. This is obviously not an easy task. Learning and pickup up issues on the car will take some time.

If I were you, I'd get diagnostic on the gearbox done by ZF as the bare minimum. Over and above get the shocks tested by a 3rd party to see if they are in spec. If you pick up any issues you can use these reports as motivation when you take the car in to BMW.

Thanks Buddy, I only found one other that fit the above criteria but it wasn't looked after , this one is a one owner from dealership.
I will get into contact from ZF about diagnostics, do you perhaps know of common issues I should look out for?

Just make sure the oil doesn't have contamination in, and that your adaption values are in spec. Call up Nico, he should be able to guide you and the diagnostic doesn't take too long.

Has anyone really had issues with the ZF 8 speed gearbox at higher mileages? I'm curious as to whether the oil change is really necessary on the 8 speed boxes.

I recall test driving a few cars, particularly X6's with mileages close to 200K KM and the gearboxes seem fine.

I'm sure there might have been 1 or 2 issues - but just curious as to whether it is 1 in a 100, 1000, 10000...

But I guess preventative maintenance is always good.

Back on topic. To the OP, I would get some injector cleaner and throw that in. IMHO, dirty injectors (or a clogged DPF) would probably be a more likely issue on the 330d.

When I spoke to ZF on raceday regarding the 8 speed, they advised the same thing. Get it serviced at 100k.

There are two extremely weak points on the F30 330d. They're made of rubber and just don't last very long.

1) You're not going to want to stop driving it.
2) It's gonna cost you a fortune in rear tyres.

The best car I have ever owned. (And probably ever will)

I was reading somewhere that you change oil around that mileage if you do a lot of heavy towing or drive the car like you are on a race track or you stole it, most of the time. In short, depending on how you use the car, BMW is right by saying its a lifetime oil and no need to change IMO :fencelook:

at 120k km the X1 had more wear than my E60 at 155k. Hardus said it is due to the fact that the X1 was driven more in traffic than the E60 and thus the clutch that handles 1, 2 and 3 was wearing out faster.

I would still do it at least every 80k km.

I had my car’s gearbox serviced at 80k km as well.

The small amount you pay every 80k for preventative maintenance could potentially save you upwards of R30k should the gearbox be completely shot.

As far as “lifetime oil” goes - BMW considers motorplan to be “lifetime”, which would mean 7 years at most.

If you really believe that the box has “lifetime oil” and you intend on keeping the car for quite some time, you might as well start saving up for the R30k rebuild.
